About the Wine

“Primitivo is practically synonymous with Puglia and the south of Italy.”~Decanter

The story of Morella dates to 1992, when Lisa Gilbee, an Australian winemaker discovered Puglia. She was immediately mesmerized by this beautiful wine region. It was something about these old vines and the paradisiacal landscapes that made her fall in love with Puglia, and she immediately moved and continued her wine journey here.

Together with her husband, she bought some plots of old-vine Primitivo, and Negroamaro, and planted some Fiano vines. The vines are planted in terra Rossa soils and managed under sustainable and biodynamic viticulture.

La Signora, which translated means the “the Mrs.” comes from 55-year-old single vineyard Primitivo grapes. The vineyard is located in the beautiful region of Manduria.

It must be said that the Primitivo di Manduria is slightly different from the rest of Puglia. Manduria has a privileged location, right in the middle of the Salento peninsula, which allows the marine breeze coming from both the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea to refresh the vineyard; the soil is composed of limestone with iron oxide fossils, giving it a distinctive red color, this soil is also known as Terra Rossa and it is typical of the Mediterranean region; the climate is ideal too, with mild winters and extremely hot summers. Decanter said. "Primitivo is the most sun-loving grape I have seen."

Tasting Notes: 100% Primitivo. Concentrated fruit, black cherries, liquored prunes, tobacco, and chocolate notes. Layered with tertiary components developing like leather, dried leaves, and black tea. The palate is powerful and opulent with mouth-fulling fruit. This is one of the best Primitivos we've had in a long time.

Reviews

Plenty of chew and concentration, but remarkable balance. Blackberry and black raspberry offset by ginger, bay laurel, and hints of dried flowers. Lingers with evocative baked earth. Bravo! ~96 Points, Decanter.
