Chateau Pouget is one of the more complex Classified growths in the Medoc. Chateau Pouget in Margaux was created in 1748 when François Antoine Pouget inherited the estate and Margaux vineyards and gave the them his family name. In 1771, the daughter of François Antoine Pouget married Pierre Antoine de Chavailles. During the French Revolution, part of Chateau Pouget was annexed into Chateau Kirwan. However Chateau Pouget remained with the de Chavailles family for over 150 years! Today, Pouget is owned by the Guillemet family, who took over the estate in 1906. Lucien Guillemet currently manages the estate along with their sister vineyard, Chateau Boyd Cantenac, also in the Margaux appellation.

Chateau Pouget is one of the very few, 1855 Classified Medoc Bordeaux estates without a true chateau on the property. They are located on a small side street not far from the tiny village of Margaux; the vineyards are situated in walking distance to Chateau Boyd Cantenac & Chateau Kirwan. The wine is made in what looks like an old converted house. Winemaker Laurent Guillement is one of the rare winemakers in the Medoc who is also the chateau owner as well; he developed his skills & reputation as the winemaker of Chateau Giscours from 1970 through 1990.

The 17 hectares, Left Bank vineyard of Chateau Pouget is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and the vines average 40 years old, with a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The vineyard has a terroir of sand and gravel soils in the Margaux appellation. Chateau Pouget uses 100% organic farming techniques and just earned their organic certification, starting with the 2017 vintage.

To produce the wine of Chateau Pouget, vinification takes place in temperature controlled, stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in a combination of French oak barrels and vats. The wine is aged in 30% to 50% new French oak barrels for between 12 and 18 months. The percentage of new oak used in the aging varies due to the quality and character of the vintage. On average, 5,000 cases of Pouget are produced each vintage.

Reviews

Classic. Classy. This wine has dramatically opened up to reveal itself as yet another outstanding wine from the vintage of the century. A stupendous example of Margaux at an ex-cellar price that cannot be beat for a Classified growth. This wine is punching up above its class and possibly the best cellar discovery of the year for us in Bordeaux. Dark berries, black cherry, toasted thyme, healthy dose of oak and vanilla, and gripping tannins. Drink now or continue to hold through 2025. 96 BHW Staff
