About the Wine
Sauternes is the iconic sweet wine of Bordeaux. This region is a paradise for lovers of sweetness, finesse, and elegant wines. It's not easy to find a good value Sauternes, (wines from this region can fetch up to $1,000 a bottle or more,) but when we do, we're thrilled to share them with you!
Sauternes wines are made primarily from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that have been naturally affected by noble rot, Botrytis fungus. In this case, it’s a desirable fungus, allowing the perfect growing conditions for sweet wine. The fungus causes small holes in the skin of the grapes, and the grapes dehydrate on the vine, concentrating the sugar in the grapes, they look like raisins at harvest. The result is a wine with deep and complex flavors and aromas.
The 41-hectare vineyard of Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey is planted to 93% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle. The vines are planted to a density that is kept at an even 6,666 vines per hectare. On average, the vines are close to 40 years of age.
The Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey Sauternes is vinified in new and used, French oak barrels. The wine is aged in an average of 60% new, French oak barrels for 18 – 20 months. Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey produces an average of 5,500 cases of Sauternes per year.
Tasting Notes: Sweet Wine. 93% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle. The pale lemon-colored 2016 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a complex nose of chalk dust, honeycomb, and almond growing over a core of marmalade, peach cobbler, and lemon curd. Sweet, concentrated, and backed up by oodles of racy freshness, it has a very long, layered finish. With 22 years of aging, today is PERFECT to drink it!

With layers of sweet, ripe, tropical pineapple, apricots, orange, peach, vanilla and honey, this medium/full bodied sweet, Bordeaux wine offers a juicy mouthful of rich, spicy, honey coated nuts and ripe yellow fruits. The 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a very refined, elegant bouquet that demonstates more mineralite than the previous vintages: great tension here with marmalade, quince and dried honey scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening. The acidity is nicely judged with touches of spice and nutmeg, although the finish is quite linear and does not quite deliver the panache of its peers. Still, this is drinking extremely well now and should continue to give pleasure over the next decade or so. ~92 Wine Advocate
The 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, which just predates Silvio Denz’s ownership, has an attractive nose of dried honey, praline and walnut, displaying good intensity though not amazingly complex. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, fine acidity and a touch of orange peel and spicebox toward the finish. Elegant and refined, but it needs a little more length. ~91 Vinous
