Wine From a Real Medieval Castle: 2015 Castello di Montegiove Gatto Gatto Orvietano Rosso DOC

**Pop**, the cork falls out of the bottle, the aromas of Tuscany engulf the room… is this Brunello, is it Bolgheri, or even a Super Tuscan?? CLOSE!

One sip, and we knew we had to get every bottle of this wine during our travels to Italy. There are certain wines that just leave you speechless. Today’s wine took our breath away, and that’s also why the 2015 Castello di Montegiove Gatto Gatto Orvietano Rosso DOC is a BHW selected import. A wine that easily matches, and even beats wines 2x the price from popular regions like Brunello and Bolgheri. The epitome of ‘leave no rock unturned’.

What makes it so special?

Umbria’s Castello di Montegiove sits atop a hill that overlooks the borders of Umbria, Tuscany, and Lazios. It's technically located in the Orvieto appellation, known for its outstanding white wines. The wine’s classification of Orvietano Rosso DOC is merely due to its administrative location, though. Montegiove’s geological location is situated on what’s known as the “Tuscan nappe” where amazing quality “Tuscan-esque” wines are produced with a price tag that’s a fraction of Tuscan wines.

Owner and winemaker Lorenzo Misciattelli makes wine in a space where wine has been made since before the 15th century. His wines are among the most awarded in all of Italy. Guided by a philosophy that combines modern winemaking with tradition and culture, Lorenzo and his team thrive to create quality wines with meticulous attention to every detail. They hit it out of the ballpark with Gatto Gatto. A blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero, it’s intensely perfumed, complex, and enticing.

We love this wine, and we love that when you open the bottle, you’ll be drinking Umbrian paradise at a fraction of the price of its Tuscan equivalent.
