95-97 Point Vintage: 2018 Chateau Bernard Magrez St. Estephe

When you own four acclaimed Cru Classé Châteaux—Pape Clément, La Tour Carnet, Fombrauge, and Clos Haut-Peyraguey—you undoubtedly excel at crafting French wine. Bernard Magrez owns those prestigious estates. He’s also the man behind Chateau Bernard Magrez St. Estephe where the terroir benefits from soil-rich nutrients from the Gironde estuary and the vineyard is located on a parcel with 30 meters of elevation.

Magrez purchased the estate in 2016, and its wines are already attracting the attention of critics and wine lovers. With help from wine superstar consultant Michel Rolland, who has consulted with at least 80 Bordeaux wineries, this Merlot/Cab Sauv blend is “finely crafted,” according to James Suckling.

If you love a heavier, oaky styled Cab blend, you’ll love this wine.

Magrez is celebrated for his attention to detail. That attention has resulted in an exceptional wine from what Suckling has called an “exceptional” vintage in Bordeaux.
