2019 Near Perfect Vintage: 2019 Heir Apparent Spring Mountain District “Cellar Selection” Red Wine
A few months ago, when we offered the 2019 Heir Apparent Cabernet Sauvignon, we mentioned that wines like that one are one of the reasons BHW exists. We started out offering wines from Napa locals who made excellent wines with top grapes from top AVAsbut didn’t have productions large enough to garner much attention outside of the region. We still love to bring you these lesser-known wines because they offer a value that often can’t be beaten.
Today, we have another Heir Apparent wine—the 2019 Heir Apparent Spring Mountain District “Cellar Selection” Red Wine—and we’re just as pleased to bring it to you as we were when we offered the Cab. Why? Winemaker Dwight Bonewell of the celebrated Grand Napa Vineyards spearheads the Heir Apparent series of Napa wines, a line of thoughtfully produced wines from Napa’s best AVAs that are hand-crafted with care and whole-hearted resolve. The goal of Heir Apparent is to craft ultra-luxury winesmeant to be treasured in a wine lover’s cellar.
Also, Napa’s 2018 vintage was “near perfect” according to Bloomberg. When you combine a near-perfect vintage with fruit sourced from some of Spring Mountain AVA’s best fruit, you’ve got something special. Spring Mountain has rich volcanic soils and vineyards planted at elevations of 1,300 to 2,000 feet above sea level are ideal for traditional Bordeaux grapes.
Bonewell makes sure he’s involved in every step of the winemaking process for this blend made from Spring Mountain Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grapes. The wine has a sense of place that shines through in the soft and balanced structure of the wine plus the expressive tannins that are a result of the cooler mountain region. James Suckling, along with a 91-point score, praised the wine saying it has “nice drinkability and refined tannins” plus a “long, savory finish.”
Heir Apparent is (not yet) as well known as Grand Napa Vineyards, but the wines are just as meticulously produced, yet not as pricey. Because they’re less well-known, we’ve been able to secure a small number of bottles of the intense and complex 2019 Heir Apparent Spring Mountain District Red at such significant savings—almost 65% off!— that this wine will be gone in the blink of an eye!
So don’t wait to order this complex, savory red blend from one of Napa’s prestigious regions. Ultra-luxury Napa reds from the near-perfect vintage are rarely under $50, but this one is, although it certainly drinks like a $100+ bottle!
