Guigal's 2x 93pt Show-Stopping Gigondas: 2019 E. Guigal Gigondas Rhone

Among all the lauded wine families in France, Guigal arguably belongs at the top of the list. Their wines are the benchmark in every Rhône appellation, and they’ve achieved this zenith in just three generations. Today, the Guigal family is known for producing wines of exceptional quality from regions throughout the Rhône that offer eye-popping value.
The 93-point2019 E. Guigal Gigondas (and FYI, Gigondas is pronounced zhee-gawn-dah), is the “quiet storm” among Guigal’s village wines. Guigal is known most for its Châteauneuf-du Pape, but the winery is increasingly important in Crozes-Hermitage in the North. Gigondas is the wine that jumps up and down and demands attention when poured from the North.
The wines from Gigondas are often thought of as younger siblings to Châteauneuf du Pape, and a great alternative for those that love CdP but don’t want to break the bank. The region sits just outside of CdP with a slightly more focused approach on blending just Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, the main grapes of the region.
2019 which was an excellent vintage—95 points according to Jeb Dunnuck— for the entire Rhône Valley with a dry spring, a moderate summer, and three heat spikes before the September harvest. These conditions contributed to ripe and concentrated grapes with excellent natural acidity.
Those attributes shine in this 2019 Gigondas—from 40-year-old vines—that’s a classic GSM blend, 70% Grenache, 20 % Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre. Jeb Dunnuck notes that it’s “medium to full-bodied and nicely textured” and awarded it 93 points. Wine Advocate echos Dunnuck’s score and says it’s “rich and velvety in feel, with a long finish.”
