Head to the toe of southern Italy’s boot and you’ll find Calabria, surrounded by the Apennine mountains to the north, the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west coast, and the Ionian Sea on the east coast. It’s a beach lover’s paradise, and it’s a wine lover’s paradise. Decanter describes Calabria as "a region so lush and rich, an untouched beauty." Some of Italy’s greatest value, under-the-radar wines come from this stunning region.
The 98-point 2019 Bollina Menas Calabria IGT is one of those great value, under-the-radar wines. (Try not to jump down yet to the bottom of this email to see just what a great value this wine is.) A blend of Sangiovese, Gaglioppo, and Nerello, Luca Maroni included this wine in his Yearbook of "Best Italian Wines."
Maroni is one of the most respected Italian wine experts in the world. Every year, he judges hundreds of wines for his Yearbook, and the guide is invaluable for those who want to discover not-to-miss wines. Whether those wines come from wineries known the world over or from little-known gems like La Bollina, one thing is certain: If a wine is in the Yearbook, it’s worth your attention.
For centuries, the historical La Bollina was the residence of the Marchioness Figari of Genova. The 300-acre estate is now a modern 4-star hotel with a 9-hole golf course that expands through parts of the winery’s 70 acres of cultivated vineyards. Within the cellar, Andrea Bernardini, La Bollina's consultant, employs some of the most advanced techniques, systems, and instruments in modern winemaking.
Bernardini graduated from Pisa, one of the best schools of enology in Italy, and gained experience at Paggio Bonelli and Ruffino. He also trained in South Africa, Romania, and Greece. He’s a flying winemaker with a reputation for producing high-quality wines with respect to the expression of the different grapes and terroir in which he works.
Inhale the wine and you’ll find aromas of berries and black cherries with a little wood, licorice, and chocolate. Take one sip, and those aromas come through on the palate intertwined with vanilla. A touch of oak, core red raspberry, and fig, with notes of oregano and Mediterranean herbs, this wine finishes with a dance in the mouth.
It also has an amazing price. BHW is the exclusive importer of Bollina Minas, allowing us to offer this 98-point Rosso for 33% off and under $20!We’ll repeat.
