A Wine Lover's Dream: 2018 Soutard Cadet Cuvee Victoire Saint Emilion Grand Cru
In Bordeaux, there are many historic Châteaux. On the Right Bank, in Saint-Emilion, one of the oldest and most prestigious is Château Soutard-Cadet. Soutard-Cadet traces its history back to 1513 when it was a farm with a windmill. Wine didn’t come along until later, but this property located just a short walk from the town of Saint-Emilion—with its clay and limestone soils that lie over beds of asteriated limestone—was destined for wine.
The Merlot-based wines that come from the Château are quality in any vintage, but as you may know, 2018 was an outstanding year for Saint-Emilion. One that Vinous Media blessed with 96 points, stating that "The 2018 Right Bank wines are opulent, flamboyant reds. It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic.” From that exceptional vintage comes the 2018 Soutard-Cadet Cuvee Victoire Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, and WOW is this Bordeaux going to delight you.
In 2015 the Lefevere Family—owners of Château Sansonnet and Château Moulin Du Cadet, both Grand Cru Classés in Saint Emilion— bought Château Soutard-Cadet. They recognized the quality of the wines that the winery’s previous owners produced down through history, but they were confident that with their extensive pedigree and experience in the region that they could bring the wines to even newer heights.
They were right. Their attention to detail has brought the Château to the next level.
When crafting the Cuvée Victoire, the greatest care is taken when selecting grapes. These come from the Au Cadet plots, as well as ones from the plateau of Saint-Christopher des Bardes. The average age of the vines is 40 years old. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the wine ages in 70% French oak barrels for 16 months. A vibrant, gourmet Saint Emilion Grand Cru, a wine lover's dream.
The Cuvée Victoire is Soutard-Cadet’s outstanding second wine.Second wines are often made from younger grapes than a Château’s flagship wine, but receive the same attention and care as the flagship from the same vintage, which in this case received 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck who called it “a thrill-a-minute Saint-Emilion that readers should snatch up.”
The best part about snatching up a second wine that’s made with just as much love as the flagship? Its price is more budget-friendly.
