Burgundy produces excellent wines year after year. That’s why the wines from the region are highly prized by wine aficionados and wine collectors. While every vintage in the French region that’s a standard-bearer for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produces good wines, some vintages are better overall than others.
In the past two decades, there have been five years that experts consider the top quality vintages in Burgundy.
2005 Burgundy: Legendary Vintage
2005 was a superb vintage for both red and white Burgundy wines. It was considered one of the finest vintages in decades. The growing season had few difficulties. The summer was dry, and harvest was brought in with uniformly quality grapes, small but full of flavor and tannin. Wines from this legendary vintage are prized, and their availability is decreasing as they are consumed or bought up by collectors.

2009 Burgundy: Beautiful Reds
A late summer heatwave in 2009 allowed fruit to ripen exceptionally well, and those conditions resulted in wines that have intoxicating aromas, rich and concentrated fruits, and excellent structure. As critics began tasting the 2009 Burgundian reds, their enthusiasm for how beautiful the 2019 vintage was meant wine shops sold out of their allotments quickly.\

2014 Burgundy: Excellent, Particularly for Whites
A rainy summer gave way to a warm September in Burgundy in 2014. Late summer’s warmth helped to ripen the grapes, resulting in lean, light, refined reds that possess immense balance. The vintage was even better for white wines that are marked by enticing fruit flavors, ripeness, and juiciness.

2015 Burgundy: Extraordinary Vintage
2015 is sometimes compared to 2005, particularly for this vintage’s red wines. The reds are excellent, rich, and powerful with juicy acidity. A hot summer resulted in small, concentrated berries, and yields varied. Quality for reds, though, did not vary. 2015s are structured and intense; 2015 whites are not as uniformly excellent but the best whites from the vintage have been described as “classic white Burgundy.”

2019 Burgundy: Perhaps the Best Since 1865
There may not be enough superlatives to describe the 2019 Burgundy vintage. The summer was hot and dry, resulting in sugars and acids harmoniously concentrated in the grapes. Some experts consider this the best vintage since 1865, one that’s long been considered the best year ever in Burgundy. The 2019 reds are balanced, complex, and fruity with excellent acidity. The whites are deeply aromatic and elegant. The quality of 2019 wine from Burgundy is exceptional, but the vintage’s low yields mean there aren’t as many as the highly sought-after bottles as Burgundy lovers and collectors would like.
