This collectible gem is the result of years of meticulous vineyard management and innovative cellar techniques, crafted to perfectly embody Matteo's ideals and vision.
Matteo Ascheri breaks the mold, his aim is to produce a wine that is not only distinctive but also a true reflection of its vineyard site, grape variety, and his unique winemaking philosophy. By planting new selections of Nebbiolo in the prestigious Barolo area and employing families of clones rather than a single superclone, Matteo captures the nuanced essence of the Nebbiolo grape.
Matteo Ascheri's vineyards are managed according to sustainable agricultural principles, adhering to The Green Experience guidelines. His preferred rootstock, 420A, is chosen for its low vigour, allowing the fruit to mature longer on the vine, resulting in a later harvest and richer flavor profile. Matteo's innovative approach includes new pruning systems, careful canopy management, and rigorous green harvests, all contributing to the exceptional quality of his wines.
In the winery, Matteo Ascheri follows a philosophy of "non-intervention," avoiding excessive technological manipulation. Instead, he allows the natural characteristics of the grapes to shine, aging the wine in large casks to preserve the integrity of the vineyard's work. The result is a Barolo that is both authentic and profoundly expressive.
With vineyards and cellars dating back to 1880, Ascheri wines are rooted in a rich history and tradition. The 2019 Barolo Ascheri is a continuation of this legacy, representing the pinnacle of what Matteo Ascheri has achieved through his unwavering commitment to quality and innovation.
As a single vineyard selection produced only in the best vintages, the 2019 Matteo Ascheri Barolo Ascheri is available in limited quantities.
Tasting Notes: 100% Nebbiolo. This wine boasts an intense garnet red hue. The nose reveals a rich bouquet of ripe fruit, candied fruit, tobacco, and sweet spices. On the palate, it’s beautifully balanced with excellent structure and fine, integrated tannins. Both elegant and powerful, this wine offers a refined yet robust experience.
The Ascheri 2019 Barolo shows a classic playlist of Nebbiolo aromas with redcurrant, iris, rusty nail and licorice. The wine sits well on the palate, even at this young stage, thanks to fresh acidity and integrated tannins. This is a good-looking bottle for near and medium-term consumption. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
