Located in the historic capital of Beaujolais, Beaujeu, Domaine de Bel-Air has been producing superb Beaujolais since 1840. Today the estate is run by Jean-Marc Lafont, who, since 1992 has used eco-friendly vine techniques (HVE certified) with minimal intervention to produce healthy, natural grapes. Jean-Marc produces impressive well-built fruit-forward wines and deserves to heralded amongst the Beaujolais elite.
2018 was a near-perfect vintage, much like 2015 the wines are well built and have great aging potential. The 2018 Domaine de Bel-Air Morgon Les Charmes is a well-built wine with some aging potential. Coming from hand-harvested, 50-year-old vines, the wine is rich with fine tannins and a staggering long finish. This 2018 Beaujolais is a perfect backyard wine best enjoyed while flipping burgers on the grill underneath the warmth of the sun.
Aging: In vats and barrels for 8 months.
Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 100% Gamay. This wine dons a deep garnet red robe and gives off ripe stone fruit aromas including cherry, peach, apricot, and plum. Well-built, this rich, powerful, and fleshy wine comes from soils made up of really ancient schist and eruptive rock. A wine to lay down, suited to 5 to 10 years’ cellaring.
Some deeper aromas here with darker fruit and mineral notes, leading to a palate that has impressive density and rich dark berries. Long, stony finish. Really rich. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
One of the top climates, or vineyard sites, of Morgon, has delivered this richly endowed wine. Firm tannins are still very present, giving serious structure to the wine at this stage. It will always have a framework, but black-currant flavors will develop well to give an attractive wine from 2021. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
