About the Wine

“Sancerre is home to some of France's tangiest, most thirst-quenching white wines, made from Sauvignon Blanc.” ~Wine Spectator.

Sancerre is an appellation located in the eastern part of the Loire Valley. This appellation produces red and rosé, but it’s undoubtedly the white Sancerre the flagship style of the whole region. Decanter said, “Sancerre is today a Sauvignon Blanc stronghold in France's Loire Valley, known for delicious dry white wines with beautiful texture and refreshing acidity.”

Domaine Jean-Paul Balland is a family-owned estate that excels in crafting exceptional Sauvignon Blanc. Nestled in the beautiful hillsides of Bué, this 48-acre vineyard combines tradition, passion, and innovation. With sustainable farming practices and a transition to organic cultivation, the estate is now expertly managed by Jean-Paul's daughters, Isabelle and Elise.

The unique terroir of Sancerre, with its diverse geological layers, gives this wine its distinctive character. The estate’s vineyards span three main terroirs: clay-limestone "White Lands," stony "Caillottes," and clay-siliceous soils. This complexity contributes to the wine’s full-bodied roundness, floral and fruity notes, and remarkable minerality.

This Sancerre is versatile and pairs beautifully with seafood and spicy Thai cuisine. Its crisp acidity and creamy mouthfeel enhance any meal, making it perfect for both sophisticated dinners and casual gatherings.

The Balland family’s winemaking roots go back to the 17th century. Jean-Paul Balland established the estate in the early 80s, and today, his daughters continue the family tradition with a modern touch. The 2023 vintage, the vineyard’s first fully organic production, showcases its purity and mineral-driven character.

Tasting Notes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc. This wine shines with a clear, pale yellow hue. Its intense bouquet of citrus and peach flowers expands with aeration, revealing ripe white peach, pink grapefruit, honeyed sweetness, and subtle white flowers. On the palate, it’s lively and generous, featuring ripe white peach, pink grapefruit, quince, and elegant minerality. The broad, lingering finish leaves a refreshing note of fresh almond.
