Year after year, Schiavenza's Barolos have been positioned among our bestsellers. Schiavenza's Barolos are the epitome of power, high quality, and uniqueness. This estate is not only loved by us but also by some of the most important wine critics, who have spoken very highly about this winery.

Tom Hyland from Forbes Magazine, featured Schiavenza in its “Best 25 Producers of Barolo” publication and said, “If you are looking for a classic Serralunga Barolo that offers a structure for long-term cellaring, the wines from Schiavenza are ideal candidates. Traditional in the winemaking, each Barolo is an excellent representation of its site, from the Serralunga commune bottling to Broglio, Ceretta, and Prapò. The wines are rugged in nature, but never aggressive, and are beautifully made with great restraint and harmony."

Schiavenza is located in the magical region of Serralunga d'Alba, in the Barolo DOCG. This winery, which began with the brothers Vittorio and Ugo, is currently managed by Luciano Pira. Luciano and Nebbiolo are like synonyms, this brilliant agronomist has been producing some of the most exceptional Nebbiolos from this region.

Schiavenza is made up of more than 24 acres of vineyards in Serralunga d'Alva, plus some acres in Monforte d'Alba, both vineyards are home to excellent quality, top-tier, artisanal red wines. Everything about Schiavenza Winery is impressive, the winery radiates the culture of the Piedmont area.

Serralunga d'Alba is known for producing some of the finest and most powerful Barolo wines. This region is considered one of the five major communes within the Barolo zone (alongside Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, and Monforte d'Alba.)

The vineyards of Serralunga d'Alba are situated on the hillsides surrounding the village. The soil composition is predominantly rich in limestone and clay, providing excellent drainage and providing unique characteristics to the wines. These wines are known for their robustness, structure, and firm tannins, and have an enormous age-ability.

Serralunga d'Alba is home to some prestigious wineries, including iconic producers such as Massolino, Fontanafredda, and Luciano Sandrone, which wines can go up to more than $200/bottle! Schiavenza shares terroir with these legendary producers, but not the price tag. On top of that, BHW has the lowest price anywhere, so, if you truly want to experience the magic of a beautiful Barolo, this wine is for you!

2018 was a great year for this region. Wine Spectator awarded this vintage with a 93pt review and said it delivered "fresh, elegant Barolos, open-knit with vibrant acidity."

Broglio is Schiavenza's most fruit-forward cru. Broglio is a very special Cru in the Serralunga d'Alba village. It all begins with the terroir, Broglio's unique location, soil composition, and microclimate work in harmony to create an environment perfectly suited for cultivating the finest Nebbiolo grapes. These grapes, known for their incredible depth and complexity, form the backbone of Barolo wines.

Finding a top-quality Cru Barolo at a reasonable price is practically impossible, and even more impossible when it comes from one of the finest and most esteemed villages like Serralunga d'Alba.

Barolo <$50/Btl is fast disappearing. BHW's direct import model allows us to bring you quality wines at great prices.

Aging: 3 years in 2,000- to 4,000-liter Slavonian oak barrels

100% Nebbiolo. This wine has a great structure, it is austere but deeply exciting. Aromas of cherries, and currants, combined with tobacco and earthy notes. It finishes off with a long and fine length. Pair this wine with game, grilled dishes, or mature cheeses.

The 2018 Barolo Broglio is an imposing wine. Iron, dried herbs, white pepper, and orange peel give the Broglio a very distinctive and exotic profile. There's good energy that builds through mid-palate and into the finish. Overall, this is an impressive showing. Give it a few years to come together. ~93 Vinous

The 2018 Barolo Broglio (with fruit from Serralunga d'Alba) is rich and savory with dark fruit and plenty of spice at the back. The effect is large in scope but also a bit monotone with general, broad-brush aromas. Dark and purple fruits segue to cured tobacco and sweet spice that is contrasted against a savory tone of rusty nail or iron ore. ~92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Red berries and tobacco-like spice on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with a tight, silky feel and a good core of bright fruit and spice. Quite racy this year with a lighter tannin framework. Try from 2023. ~92 James Suckling
