About the Wine

In the world of wine, Sangenís i Vaqué may be a well-kept secret, but it's a gem that shines with unparalleled quality. This family-owned winery, despite its small size, is the embodiment of passion and tradition.

If you're eager to savor the exquisite taste of a well-aged Priorat wine, your opportunity has arrived!

In 1978, Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué began planting vines on Pere's family-owned lands in Porrera, D.O. Priorat. These vineyards had been in Conxita's family since before 1700.

In 1979, Pere and Conxita started winemaking at the Plaza Catalunya cellar, once owned by Conxita's grandfather, Josep Simó, a wine enthusiast since 1886.

Over the years, Pere combined tradition with modern winemaking trends in this cellar. Today, their daughters, Maria and Núria Sangenís, share the responsibility of crafting these outstanding wines.

Their vineyards, within D.O.Ca. Priorat is located on terraces and slopes with the famous "llicorella" slate soil. These challenging soils, paired with a dry climate, result in low yields and exceptional quality.

With 37 acres in production, Sangenís i Vaqué divides its vineyards into three parcels or "trossos." They are committed to organic farming and are soon to be certified as ecological producers.

Harvesting occurs at optimal ripeness, with grapes carefully selected. Only pristine, hand-selected grapes enter the cellar, where destemming is done gently to protect the berries. Fermentation takes place in ancient subterranean lagares or "cubs," now modernized with ceramic tiles.

Vall Por, formerly known as the enchanting village of Porrera, takes its name from the "Valle del Miedo," which translates to the Valley of Fear. This wine showcases a unique and splendid blend of Carinena, Garnacha, Merlot and Cab grapes, offering a harmonious balance of flavors. What makes Vall Por truly unique is its unfiltered nature, allowing it to preserve its authentic character.

Aging: One year in oak barrels, 80% French (Allier) and 20% American oak.

Tasting Notes: 35% Cariñena, 35% Garnacha, 15% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is drinking phenomenally well right now. Even after letting this wine sit on the counter, open, for two days, it still had life. This wine seems indestructible and set to continue to deliver joy at 30+ years. If you love aged red wines, you owe it yourself to try this. It's like stealing.

Reviews

This ripe holdover from 2006 proves that Priorat wines can age well. This wine is full of licorice, spice cake and other heady aromas, while the palate is lush and chewy, but still hanging in there. Flavors of black fruits, chocolate, burnt toast, black coffee and licorice finish dense and long. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
