About the Wine
Amarone della Valpolicella Docg is the home of the wine known simply Amarone and is one of the most prestigious winemaking regions in the Veneto. Located northwest of Verona in the northeast corner of Italy, the wines of this region have been popular since the Roman times. The Valpolicella region is large. It is home to the valleys of the Lessini Mountains as well as the steep, hillsides that are filled with vines. The hillsides have clay and limestone soils and temperatures that produce the best quality Amarone.
Amarone della Valpolicella is defined by a unique process (appassimento) in which fully ripe grapes are air dried on straw mats for up to four months. This labor-intensive process, lengthy fermentation and aging of the wine contributes to its often high price.
Located in the heart of Valpolicella Classic, this wine is full-bodied, with peppery, berry characters, medium tannins and a fine finish. The after-taste confirms the character of the bouquet. This wine has a long-lasting and persistent flavour.
Grape varieties: 30% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, 10% Oseleta, Negrara, Dindarella, Croatina and Forselina.
Reviews
The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Capitel Monte Olmi exhibits masculine appeal with syrupy tones of dried currant, creme de cassis, resin, tar, pipe tobacco, road pavement, black licorice and dried porcino mushroom. This is a massive wine no matter how you slice it with solid tannins, bright acidity, high alcohol (16%) and huge extraction. It’s built like a tank and will likely last a very long time, slowly gaining in complexity and elegance as it undergoes its cellar evolution. Drink 2015-2028. ~93+, WA
Notes of wild herb, spice box and pekoe tea mark this aromatic red, while grippy tannins frame the tightly knit flavors of dried currant, iron, rhubarb and wood smoke. This traditional style needs air, so enjoy alongside food to get the full effect. Best from 2016 through 2026. 200 cases imported. ~92, WS
Made from vines in Tedeschi's steep Monte Olmi Vineyard, this is a structured, well-balanced Amarone, with an intense fruit-and-spice fragrance. The palate delivers black cherry, mint and nutmeg flavors, with a hint of tobacco. It has great depth, with a velvety mouthfeel supported by fresh acidity. ~92, WE
