“Primitivo is practically synonymous with Puglia and the south of Italy.” ~Decanter
Right on the heel of Italy’s boot is located the small town of Manduria, where you will find Agricola Felline, an ode to the Primitivo grape.
It all started with the visionary vintner, Gregory Perrucci, who dedicated his life to promoting and enhancing the Primitivo, which was previously used to produce low-end wines. Gregory noticed the great potential that this grape had and decided to study the terroirs in the area to find the one that best adapted to this special variety, that is how the Accademia dei Racemi was born.
The Accademia dei Recemi, founded in 1966, is a project that aims at the research, growth, and promotion of this region's native grapes. This academy developed a new approach to viticulture in the area and thanks to this project, some grapes such as Primitivo, Malvasia Nera, Fiano Minutolo, Ottavianello, and Sussumaniello have reached their full potential, producing spectacular, high-quality wines.
It must be said that the Primitivo di Manduria is slightly different from the rest of Puglia. Manduria has a privileged location, right in the middle of the Salento peninsula, which allows the marine breeze coming from both the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea to refresh the vineyard; the soil is composed of limestone with iron oxide fossils, giving it a distinctive red color, this soil is also known as Terra Rossa and it is typical of the Mediterranean region; the climate is ideal too, with mild winters and extremely hot summers. "Primitivo is the most sun-loving grape I have seen." ~Decanter.
Aging: 6 months in new French oak barrels.
Good full red. Aromas of blueberry, black cherry, steel shavings, and blood orange. A creamy-sweet fruit bomb but not at all over the top, offering a remarkably light touch to its flavors of red fruit and herbs. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a nicely persistent savory character. Aged roughly nine months in new French oak. ~92 Points, Vinous.
Inky ruby in the glass, this rich wine offers aromas of cherry jam on the nose, alongside iodine, blood orange, and a savory note reminiscent of sake. There's density to the lush fruit on the medium-bodied palate, supported by firm tannins and well-balanced acidity. A cocoa-dusted blueberry note lingers on the finish. ~Wine Enthusiast.
