Insider's Tip: This wine is served at 3 star Michelin rated and Top 50 restaurant in the world, El Cellar Can Roca in Girona, Spain. Expect to pay a lot more there...

The Pons family has spared no expense in creating an ultra-modern winery sitting atop terraced vineyards that rise up to 2,300 feet.  The winery building, constructed of stone and wood, embraces design concepts of order, symmetry and openness. Visitors can enjoy sweeping light-filled vineyard views.  The cellar facilities combine cutting-edge technology with traditional methods to maximize expression of terroir in the wines, a signature of their production.  Recently the Pons family acquired an old-vine vineyard, adding it to their 100-plus acres of organically grown grapes. The estate also produces a highly regarded olive oil which has been shipped worldwide by the past four family generations.

About the Region

Costers del Segre means 'the banks of the River Segre', which flows down from the Pyrenees and joins the River Ebro just south of Lleida.  Costers del Segre is the first DO to have its own sustainability program, with the aim of continually improving the best resources, while taking into consideration environmental health, economic viability and social accountability.  Traditional varietals cultivated here include Tempranillo, Garnacha and Trepat; and the main red international grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.  Costers del Segre DO wines are characterized by a powerful aroma and balanced flavor while delivering a good tannic expression, and on the palate they are tasty, ample and structured.

About the winemaker

Marti Magriňá, a local boy who grew up in his own family's vineyards, has a deep attachment to the land around Clos Pons.  He attended the University of Tarragona and has become recognized as an authority in Spain. His winemaking career has taken him to some of the most acclaimed wine regions worldwide--in France, California, Chile and throughout Spain.  Magriňá has worked at large cooperatives and also been intimately involved with small, family projects.  With such wide experience he has developed a very open approach to many possibilities of the world of winemaking, and has a particular knack for marrying modern oenological techniques with traditional methods. He says, “Any winemaker’s dream is to put a small piece of land in the wine universe. Many spots around are able to make good wines, but Albages and the valley that harbors Clos Pons Vineyards are singular and appear in a prominent place in that universe.”
