About the Wine

The world of wine loves Dragonette Cellars, some of the most recognized wine critics just can't stop praising this winery. To give you an idea of how highly esteemed Dragonette is, let's quote just a couple of them:

Dragonette is one of the most fascinating wineries on the Central Coast. The best wines are truly world-class, and I don’t use those words lightly.”Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

“These are beautiful, distinctive, and incredibly high-quality wines across the board, and at the top end are some of the most impressive wines I was able to taste from Santa Barbara County.” ~ Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Dragonette Cellars was founded in 2005 by brothers John and Steve Dragonette and Brandon Sparks-Gillis, their dream started when they were working in a famous wine store in Los Angeles.

From the beginning, John, Steve, and Brandon were very clear about what they wanted to achieve: The best wines with the best fruit from Santa Barbara; this led them to years of arduous research and search for vineyards that would achieve the optimum quality they were looking for. Currently, the grapes to make their recognized labels come from different vineyards, each one specialized in different grape varieties, which are found in some of the most outstanding AVAs in Santa Barbara Country such as Happy Canyon, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Ynez, and Ballard Canyon.

2013 Dragonette Cellars 'MJM' honors John, Steve, and Brandon’s wives, who have been their accomplices during this crazy and exciting wine adventure. This wine is perfect in every sense! The combination of the Syrah from the Santa Ynez Valley and the outstanding 2013 vintage results in this glorious wine. It delivers a very powerful nose, full of spice and dark fruit and an extraordinary depth, resulting in a very elegant and complex wine.

Aging: 27 months in French oak, 29% new.

Tasting Notes:  92% Syrah 7% Grenache 1% Viognier. Ripe and complex aromas of sweet berry, with integrated acidity, fine, present tannin, and a great finish. Pair this wine with game, lamb, veal, and pasta.

Reviews

There are excellent savory qualities to this bottling, with white pepper, charred lamb, soy and pine resin adding much intrigue to the black currant fruit. The umami character is strong on the sip, with beef jerky, black pepper and wild mushroom broth flavors, but there is also some tangy fruit as well as upright tannins that will keep this wine singing for years. Drink now–2028” ~ 95 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

“Showing a cool-climate-like vibe in its pepper, olive, gamey and dark-fruited profile, the 2013 MJM (92% Syrah, 7% Grenache and 1% Viognier) is ripe, supple and beautifully balanced and seamless on the palate. With integrated acidity, fine, present tannin and a great finish, drink this fabulous Syrah over the coming decade or more. This cuvée is a blend of favorite barrels and comes mostly from the John Sebastiano Vineyard, yet has smaller amounts from Stolpman, Thompson and Harrison-Clarke.” ~94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck.
