Balance is a word that’s hard to narrow down. What’s work, life, and family balance look like anyway? This wine, above all, is BALANCED.

Some Chardonnays are too sweet, too oaky, or flabby (not enough acid). Not this time. Not this wine.

This wine has an exquisite balance which is why it’s one of our top Napa Chards of 2024.

If it’s true that you are what you eat (and drink), then perhaps, drinking this wine will offer you more balance.

In the lush, rolling hills of the Spring Mountain District, where the vineyards bask in the perfect balance of sun and shade, lies the birthplace of the exquisite 2021 Keenan Chardonnay. This Chardonnay reflects the unique terroir of its high-altitude origins.

Over forty years ago, Robert Keenan envisioned greatness in Napa Valley’s mountains. In 1974, he purchased 180 acres in the Spring Mountain District at 1,700 feet elevation. This area, recognized as an AVA in 1993, features low-vigor soils perfect for producing wines with remarkable concentration and structure.

Robert's land included the historic, but dilapidated, Peter Conradi Winery. He cleared the estate, expanded vineyard acreage, and replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Utilizing the old stone walls, he built a new winery and celebrated Keenan Winery’s first harvest in 1977.

Under the dynamic leadership of Michael Keenan, the Keenan Winery has flourished. Taking over the reins from his father, Robert Keenan, in 1998, Michael has redefined and refined the winery’s approach, and proudly announces its sustainable practices on every label. The winery was listed on Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries of the Year.

At Keenan Winery, it’s not just about wine; it’s about family. Michael's wife, Jennifer, brings her artistic flair to the winery, creating stunning design elements and managing special events with aplomb. Their son, Reilly, represents the third generation, bringing his own passion and expertise to the vineyard and cellar.

Aging: Fermented and aged in French and American oak barrels

100% Chardonnay. Citrus, ripe pear and green apple in the nose. Hints of lush white peach are noticed as the wine opens up. The sur-lie aging has added richness and complexity, and a touch of toasty oak returns on the finish. Like all of Keenan’s wines, this Chardonnay is a food worthy wine whose crisp acidity and medium body will accompany a wide variety of cuisine.

This has a chalky character with sliced apples and pears and hints of lemon zest and dried herbs. Medium- to full-bodied with a creamy, weighty palate, yet the crisp acidity adds freshness and tone. Lingering, textural finish with hints caramel and pastry. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling

Keenan’s high-elevation chardonnay is earthy and savory, layering scents of chamomile and dry peach, caramel and pear. The flavors last on that caramel-pear richness while not getting sticky, instead holding to mountain-grown tension. Pleasingly rich and bright.~92 Wine & Spirits Magazine
