About The Wine

Located in the Veneto between Verona and Lake Garda, Valoplicella is ripe for wine growing. Its soils are enriched with limestone and minerals that nourish indiginous varieties. The breezy, Mediterranean climate does its job to nurture the grapes, too, and it’s difficult to go anywhere in the region without seeing thriving, beautiful vines.

Two of the most recognizable wines from this region are Amarone and Recioto. Both are made from dried grapes to extract intense aroma and flavor, Amarone is usually done in a dry or off-dry while Recioto is usually done in a sweet style.

Recioto is the historical antecedent to Amarone. In the past, traditional production methods produced wines that were off-dry. They were prized for their higher alcohol and sugar levels. Recioto was a luxury wine drunk by royals and even the Popes.

Recioto della Valpolicella is one of the key DOCGs in the Veneto. Brunelli’s Recioto is a sweet but balanced dessert wine made from indigenous grapes grown in soils of mainly red clay and limestone deposited long ago from glaciers. It’s excellent with pastries, almonds, panettone, berries, and blue and mature cheeses. Although it’s a red wine, serve it on the chilled side, about 60°F.

Dessert wines are underrated and under-appreciated. Consider a small glass in the late afternoon or before sunset as an aperitif to whet the palate. This is also a wine you’ll want to finish out your next dinner party, or simply your next Thursday night dinner.

Aging: Begins its maturation in Allier oak barriques for around 8 months and it then spends a further 6 months in bottle before being released

Tasting Notes: Corvina Veronese 70%, Rondinella 25%, Molinara 5%. On the nose, there are the telltale ripe cherries that Recioto is known for plus violets, plums, raisins, spices, and caramel. It’s full and complex, rounded and fruity, but at the same time refined and well-balanced. A slight flavor of almonds on the finish.
