What happens when a couple of scientists fall in love with wine? You get Abacela.
Approaching the industry from a very different point of view, Earl and Hilda started the wine affair with scientific rigor. They quickly became some of the most influential wineries in Oregon and across the USA.
The name “Abacela”, comes from the latin: “plant a vine”. Abacela has an interesting and successful story. Scientists Earl and Hilda Jones, despite their lack of expertise in the wine industry, pursued their dream of planting their first vines in 1995 in Oregon's Umpqua Valley.
Abacela specializes in Tempranillo grapes. In fact, they were the first ones to plant this variety in the region, which perfectly adapted and thrived!
Earl was Abacela's winemaker since they founded the estate in 1996. Now, Andrew Wenzl is the winemaker. Andrew is really passionate with his work, he believes: “Truly great wine is made in the vineyard. The best wines almost make themselves "
Earl is a scientist by profession, but his entire childhood he lived on a family farm, surrounded by nature. He learned sustainable, organic and biodynamic viticulture from a young age and implemented it in his own vineyard.
With an impeccable working method, Albacea takes special care in the vineyard. Earl says: "The main objective of Abacela is to preserve the character and quality of the fruit until the end of the bottle."
2019 Abacela Albarino comes from the Umpqua Valley and is fermented in stainless steel tanks to keep its beautiful freshness.
This crisp and aromatic, aromas of green apple, pineapple, pear, and a lemon-lime component. Beautiful floral aromas and bright acidity. Perfect wine for seafood lovers!
"This rich, ripe and supremely fragrant effort bursts open with scents of lemon oil and orange peel. The palate-coating fruit flavors run through Mandarin oranges, ripe apples, and a frame of lemon rind. It's lush and lively, bolstered with sappy acids, through a long finish.” ~ 91 WE
