About the Wine

Calyptra Inedito is a limited-edition red blend, only 3,000 bottles were made in 2017. This is a highly allocated wine, and it's only produced in the best vintages. This stunning blend of Cabernet, Syrah, and Merlot grapes, is a careful selection from the best, lowest-yielding vines from Calyptra’s vineyards located just at the foot of the Andes Mountain range. This wine “brings together the very best of each variety each vintage.”

Cachapoal is located northern half of the very well-known Rapel Valle, between Maipo and Colchagua. Over the years, this region became mistakenly overlooked by its more famous neighbors, but recently, this wine region has recently reawakened the interest of some of the most acclaimed wine critics in the world.

Decanter magazine said: At present, the marketplace is seeing Chilean wine undergo an exhilarating transition from good-value everyday wine to something more diverse and quality-orientated. In the same vein, Cachapoal is finally starting to shed its apathy and aiming to put its name up there with Chile’s best wine regions.”

This first-class wine region is home to Calyptra, a family-owned boutique winery founded by Dr. José Zarhi, a very successful plastic surgeon who purchased the 150-acre estate in 1989.

The 100-acre vineyard is placed on terraces between the pre-Andean range and the Cachapoal river, at nearly 1000 meters altitude. The vines thrive in calcareous and colluvial alluvial terraces. The vineyard is managed under sustainable and organic practices.

Calyptra's philosophy is simple: “To produce unique, authentic, honest wines that reflect the soil, the origin, and the dedication and passion.” They overachieve this mantra by delivering premium wines, that will enchant any wine lover or wine critic. Just to give you an idea of the excellent quality that this winery delivers, these wines have been featured on James Suckling’s “Top Chilean Wines” on several occasions.

Aging: 28 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Syrah, 16% Merlot. Ruby color with violet hues. An outstanding nose packed with fresh red fruit aromas like cherries and plums, fruits of the Forest, and berries, along with a hint of graphite and violets.  On the palate, this is a well-structured and characterful wine. The tannins are firm but rounded and velvety, the acidity is pronounced and the finish is long and well-balanced with notes of tobacco and spices from the oak ageing. This wine has great character but is also elegant, juicy, and very aromatic. Excellent aging potential.

Reviews

Inédito has been done since the beginning of 2000, with a selection of fruits from the Calyptra vineyard in Coya, over a thousand meters high in the Andes mountain range. This vintage is 52% cabernet sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 32% syrah, all aged for 28 months in barrels before the final blend. The result has a lot to do with the firm and austere style of the winery's mountain wines. Concentrated, with firm tannins and intense acidity, it is a monumental wine that is assembled from a solid structure of tannins. To drink it in ten years. ~95 Descorchados

The ripe and oaky 2017 Inédito was produced with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah that matured in barrique for 28 months and comes through as ripe with black fruit and plenty of tannins and oak-related flavors. 3,000 bottles were produced. ~90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
