What wine lover has not tried Bolgheri wines? If we transferred the world of wine to the world of music, Bolgheri would definitely be the Beatles: disruptive, creative, original, and controversial.
Bolgheri is a region located in the beautiful Tuscany, one of the greatest references for wine.Tuscany was for a long time a very conservative wine-growing place, where it was only allowed to make wines under strict regulations and with the use of Sangiovese grapes, until the Bolgheri region resonated, where, thanks to its particular terroir conditions, it is a perfect place to plant French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, resulting in the famous “Super Tuscan Wines”. This disruptive region has managed to deliver us some of the best wines that we currently have in the world. And let me tell you, wine lovers are deeply grateful to the intrepid revolutionaries of this magnificent region!
Grattamacco is one of the most important estates in Bolgheri and the second oldest in the region, founded in 1977. It is currently owned by Claudio Tipa, who also owns the Domaine Collemassari which has 4 different estates: Castello ColleMassari, Grattamacco, Poggio di Sotto and Tenuta San Giorgio.
Grattamaco is made up of almost 200 acres of which more than 70 of them are planted with vineyards and are managed in a sustainable way and organically farmed. This estate has the oldest Vermentino vineyard in the entire region that continues to produce since 1986. As expected in Bolgheri, this vineyard is located in a perfect terroir for Bordeaux grapes, soils are made up of silt and red sand.
2016 Grattamacco Bolgheri is produced with 20-year-old-vines, and it is aged for 10 months in French oak barrel.
Tasting Notes: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese. Aromas of dark fruits and chocolate with notes of plum and black currants, elegant and full with a fresh balsamic finish. A dense and powerful wine with ripe tannins, juicy and rich with a striking structure. Pair this wine with BBQ, game, pasta Bolognese.
Blackberries and blueberries on the nose. Some meat and cedar. Full body, round and juicy finish. Structured. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and sangiovese. ~94 James Suckling.
Black currant, black cherry, graphite, cedar, and olive flavors are the hallmarks of this red. Though lean and sinewy, this is saturated, leaving a palate-staining finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2021 through 2035. 6,500 cases made, 850 cases imported. ~ 93 Wine Spectator.
