James Suckling has called Chile one of the most exciting wine regions in the world. The Clos Apalta Bordeaux blend received his highest marks in 2014, and he calls the 2015 EVEN BETTER. This has always been a unique vineyard with a special history. Indeed, over the years this wine has featured prominently on Wine Specator's Top 100 of the year. In fact, it has taken First, Second, and Third place over the years. Given the high marks and consistency of this wine, if you compare the wine to its peers in Bordeaux or Napa, it actually screams Value.
About the Vineyard
Apalta is located about 100 miles South West of Santiago in the Colchagua Valley. The Vineyard is situated on a North to South exposure, which is quite rare in Chile. The Tinguiririca river rests on one side and the hills from the Coastal Cordillera surround the vineyard like a horseshoe on the other. They are both integral in forming this unique terroir. This geography is responsible for the conditions that ensure balance for and a slow ripening for the grapes. At sunrise and sunset, the Cordillera block the sun’s rays, limiting the vines exposure to intense sunshine and the river has a cooling influence on the climate. The vineyard is both certified Organic and Biodynamic.
About the wine
Everything about this wine is top class. No expense is spared to coddle the fruit, and to make the absolute best wine possible. The deep ruby red color with purple edges has a nose that is complex opening towards ripe black fruit such as cassis, balckberry and fig, along with nuts, cinnamon and liquorice notes. In the mouth, the wine is intense with a creamy attack with black fruit flavors. Long lasting velvety tannins. Intense and elegant finish. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Reviews
There is a subtle complexity on the nose with currant, berry, fresh herb and wet earth aromas. Cut fresh flowers, too. Full body, dense and powerful. Incredible character here with such purity and polish. It goes on for minutes. Formed, sculptured yet soulful. A monumental wine for Chile. Unbelievable. More powerful than the 2014 which was 100 points. A blend of 46% carmenere, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Better in 2022. ~100 pts James Suckling
