About the Wine
Aurore de Dauzac Margaux is the second wine from the 5th Growth Classified, Château Dauzac. This wine is crafted with vines located on a special geological vein, with soils composed of fine gravel and sand. The result is a spectacular, crispy, and intensely fruity wine.
This Château dates from 1190, when Pétrus d'Auzac inherited the land from Richard I, King of England. Over the years, the superb wines from Dauzac began to acquire an excellent reputation, becoming one of the favorites of the aristocracy. This led them to be recognized as the 5th Growth Grand Cru Classe in the Official Bordeaux Classification of 1855.
Later in 1924, the Château passed into the hands of the same owners of the 2nd Growth Ducru-Beaucaillou. It was thanks to this family that Château Dauzac adopted the yellow color on its labels, a strong identity that is preserved to this day.
Throughout history, Château Dauzac has passed through different owners, from French businessmen to insurance companies. All of them have achieved important strides within the vineyard, winemaking, and cellar, and all these efforts are clearly shown in the result of the outstanding wines that are produced at Château Dauzac to this day. As of 2020, it became the property of the successful French businessman, Christian Roulleau.
The Dauzac vineyard is made up of more than 120 acres, of which 111 are in the Margaux appellation and the rest are located in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The vineyards are mostly made up of Cab Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and Petit Verdot. Château Dauzac has started to implement biodynamic principles, in addition to highly integrated agriculture and organic practices.
Éric Boissenot is the Rockstar wine consultant of this Château. He consults at forty of the Classified Châteaux including Lafite, Margaux, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Leoville Las Cases, and Ducru Beaucaillou.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95-98 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Garnet with violet reflections. The expression of the slightly floral red fruit is delicate. The palate is round and supple on the attack, with beautiful, very balanced concentration with notes of refined black fruits. A good length that stays fresh. This wine pairs beautifully with White meats, game, red meats, and cheeses.
Critical Reviews
A year in which Dauzac excelled! Both Aurore de Dauzac and Labastide Dauzac are showing really well. Aurore is a bit deeper and structured with bright black fruit, berries, fine spices and crushed stones. Dusty tannins crumble nicely on the palate with full body and a long, powdery finish. Lots of energy. Already approachable thanks to its initial balance and the fine quality of tannins, but it will improve with more complexity in two to three years. Keep an eye on this. ~94 James Suckling
Lovely, elegant, fresh, aromatic nose offering a beautiful delicacy, fullness and harmony. It reveals notes of bright strawberry, boysenberry and small notes of graphite associated with iodized touches as well as hints of cornflower, blueberry as well as hints of chocolate, toasted hazelnut and a subtle hint of bergamot. The palate is delicious, elegant, balanced and offers superb minerality, freshness, lovely energy, depth, a certain breadth as well as an enveloping side. Lovely smoothness while freshness and with an airy side. On the palate this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy blackberry, bright blackcurrant and small notes of bright cherry associated with touches of graphite, chocolate, bright berries as well as hints of toasted almond, a subtle hint of fresh flowers and crushed redcurrants. The tannins are silky. A fine chew on the finish/persistence. ~93 VertdeVin
Pure and graceful, this delivers a long, seductive flow of iris, hibiscus and violet notes that pull along a core of gently mulled black cherry and blackberry fruit before letting it all end with a pretty curl of black tea. Delicious and fully approachable already. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 9,500 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. ~92 Wine Spectator
So perfumed and fragrant on the nose, tart and vibrant, really quite intensely fruit with high acidity gives this an electric sense on the palate. Buzzy and tangy, red fruits, strawberries and red cherries with chalky, powdery and flint=laced tannins that coat the mouth gently giving tannic weight and texture. Well made with definition and freshness - a cool mint touch on the finish. Remains quite straight and serious, a touch austere to begin with then settles. Energy and brightness here, there’s tension and freshness which is great. Sharp and well defined. Ageing 18 months, 50% one vintage aged barrels, 50% 30hl foudre. ~92 Decanter
Plenty of fruit and fresh acidities, this delivers power and complexity, dark ruby in colour with plump damson fruits, probably the easiest of the two plot-driven Dauzac wines to be drunk young. 45% new oak. ~92 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
The 2022 Aurore de Dauzac comes from gravel/sand soils on the edges of the vineyard. With blackberry and touches of cassis on the nose, this cuvée is more floral than the Labastide. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and finely-knit tannins. It merges into more red fruit toward the finish that is a touch more supple. There's a pleasant saline aftertaste. ~90-92 Vinous Media
