At Le Ragnaie, every bottle showcases the harmony and elegance of Sangiovese within Brunello’s terroir. The focus is on crafting refined wines from the Sangiovese Grosso variety.
Le Ragnaie owns some of the highest altitude vineyards in all of Montalcino. This unique terroir allows them to craft wines that radiate elegance and finesse. From grape to glass, Le Ragnaie's process is infused with passion and precision. With every step, from vine nurturing to meticulous selection and artisanal winemaking, the essence of the land and the creator's vision is captured in each bottle.
Established in 2002 by owner and winemaker Riccardo Campinoti, Le Ragnaie oversees 38 acres of high-altitude vineyards meticulously situated in the Montalcino region, gracing Riccardo's wines with a distinctive complexity. Their lands are cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, following the guidelines of Organic Agriculture, and are located in three distinct areas of the Montalcino district.
The unique high elevation vineyards allow the grapes to retain freshness and help combat the warming effects of climate change. As the Wine Advocate puts it, “Le Ragnaie has become a symbol of contemporary Brunello in which elevations matter more than ever as a tool against climate change.”Le Ragnaie also embodies a commitment to sustainable farming practices, ensuring each vineyard reflects its unique terroir.
At Casanovina Montosoli Vineyard, atop the Santa Fiora Unit – Sillano Formation, history speaks louder still. Dating back to the Cretaceous Sup. – Paleocene age, these soils, dressed in gray-brown clays and calcilutites, harbor ancient secrets. Shallow to moderately deep, they boast a calcareous skeleton of varying sizes and shapes, including the unique lamellar marl type. With clay textures and a pH leaning towards the alkaline, they bear witness to time itself, in every sip. This is the essence of Casanovina Vineyards.
Aging: 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels
100% Sangiovese Grosso.

From a prime, east-facing parcel on Montosoli’s limestone rich, slatey soil, Casanovina was planted in 1999 and acquired by Le Ragnaie in 2014. Innate breeding oozes from the 2019: gracious and becoming, if not overt. Lifted violet and lavender blossom scents slowly emerge before a trace of sweet damp earth lends a grounding character. This expands over the palate with a generosity of fruit hemmed in by powdery tannins. While imposing at first, they yield supplely. Finishes with succulent, stony minerals. Exciting. ~97 Decanter
Displaying a slightly darker ruby color than the Petroso, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli takes on more depth and opens to notes of wild raspberries, fresh roses, orange peel, and anise. Medium-bodied, it also takes on more structure, with elegant concentration, ripe tannins, and seamless acidity. Long on the palate, with notes of gravelly earth and Mirabelle plum on the finish, this gorgeous wine demands another year or two in cellar. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck
The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli has medium-plus concentration and pretty aromas of cherry fruit, redcurrant, crushed mineral, watercolor paint and a generally riper bouquet, certainly when compared to the Passo del Lume Spento. These vines sit at 300 meters in elevation with mixed clay soils (and higher pH) next door to Baricci. It delivers more of a punch, and there is a savory component with leather or mild tobacco that changes with time, eventually transitioning to a point of sweetness. Structurally, this is a very beautiful wine (with 3,800 bottles released). ~97 Wine Advocate
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli tempts the imagination, blending savory herbs with fresh mint, dusty black cherry and camphor. This is pure elegance on the palate, silky-smooth and supple with cool-toned red fruits complicated by saline minerals as clove mingles with orange nuances toward the close. It finishes surprisingly fresh yet youthfully poised. Edgy tannins add a crunchy sensation, leaving subtle traces of rose petals and an air of worn leather. This harmonious beauty will provide decades of pleasurable drink, yet patience will be required. ~97 Vinous Media
Austere and tightly wound, with muscular tannins that have a lock on the cherry, plum and rose hip flavors, this red is fresh, racy even, with terrific energy and a long, flint- and mineral-tinged finish. All the components are in the right place, so be patient. ~96 James Suckling
