Anyone who knows and loves Nebbiolo would be fortunate to have the single vineyard Vietti wines in their cellar. Compared to the top wines from France, these wines are bargains.
“Vietti makes some of the cleanest, most terroir-driven wines in Piedmont, with a rare subtlety and elegance.” ~Wine Spectator.
Vietti Winery has been a watershed in the history of Italian wine. Forbes spoke about this flagship estate saying that it “has been instrumental when it comes to enlightening the world with a deeper understanding of the various cru vineyards that exist in Piedmont, Italy.” They also called it one of the “25 best Barolo producers.” To learn more about this amazing grape and the wines from it, click here.
The story started in 1800 with Carlo Vietti, but it was until 1960 that the winery took a 180º turn when Luciana Vietti married recognized winemaker Alfredo Currado. Alfredo made important improvements in the vineyard and the cellar. Vietti was one of the first wineries to ever produce a single vineyard Barolo.
Today, the winery is managed by Luca Currado and his wife Elena. Luca is an extremely talented winemaker. After gaining expertise working in renowned wineries like Simi Winery, Opus One, and Mouton-Rothschild, he went back to the family estate and continued his journey. Today, he’s recognized as one of the most talented winemakers in all of Italy, and his wines are known for being “some of the very finest Italian wine labels.”
Vietti Ravera is an outstanding Barolo and one that wine lovers and wine critics adore. The previous vintage was awarded 100-points and was featured in Robb Report's "11 Perfect 100-Point Wines You Can Buy."
Aging: For 32 months in large oak casks. It was bottled without filtration.
100% Nebbiolo. Intense garnet red color. Complex floral and fruity notes open in the glass after a little while. Hints of red fruit, mineral, and spicy nuances. Quite intense on the palate, with ripe red fruit sensations. Firm, compact tannins make this a very classic wine. Vibrant, vertical acidity. Extremely elegant and refined. Long-lasting aftertaste.
The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a wine of real depth and vertical structure. As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petals, chalk, blood orange, and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is. ~95+ Points, Vinous Media.
Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture. Exactly 7,560 bottles were made. ~95 Points, Robert Parker.
Lighter structure this year, but it’s intense, with focused red-cherry and raspberry character and spicy and mineral nuances. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a very tight finish. This is super-compact and needs time to expand. ~93 Points, James Suckling.
