Argillae is more than a winery; it is a reflection of the founder's love for the land and nature. With a focus on enhancing the originality of Umbrian territory, they let the uniqueness of the soil, climate, and grape varieties shine through in every bottle.
Covering around 300 acres, the Argillae estate is situated between the hills of Allerona and Ficulle, northwest of the city of Orvieto. The terroir couldn’t be more ideal with clay and sand soil, known as "calanchi," shaped by ancient erosion millions of years ago.
The secret to the wine’s character lies in the fossils and seashells found in our soil, remnants of the Pliocene period. This gives the grapes complexity and lend a vibrant mineral taste to the wine. The vineyard is managed with sustainable viticulture. Harvesting and pruning are done meticulously by hand, and the vineyards follow environmentally friendly practices.
Lorenzo Landi is the mastermind behind Argillae’s wines. He’s a very esteemed winemaker in the region who started his wine journey at the University of Pisa. He then traveled to the University of Bordeaux and obtained a master's in Oenology, and finally traveled to Burgundy, where he worked at Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Tollot-Beuault. In 2004, he received the “Vini di Toscana” award from the Tuscany Region. And in 2017, he was awarded “Winemaker of the Year” by Doctor Wine's “Guida Essenziale ai Vini d’Italia 2017.”
The history of Umbria is a proud one that stretches back to the Etruscans. Umbria, and in particular, the area around Orvieto, had been known since the Roman era as the best place to make outstanding white wines (according to Robert Parker). The vines are so old, and the local varietal is referred to as "Grechetto", or the little grape that the Greeks brought to Enotria.
Grechetto is a captivating and versatile grape that captures the essence of its terroir. These wines are known for their enticing aromas and flavors, revealing floral notes, such as white flowers and blossom, alongside hints of citrus, stone fruit, and herbal undertones, with a balanced acidity that lends freshness and vibrancy to each sip.
This wine is crafted with passion and nurtured by the land, this dry white wine is a must-have for wine enthusiasts seeking a taste of Umbria.
Aging: On the fine lees
Tasting Notes: 100% Grechetto. Intense aromas of jasmine flower and citrus notes. Broad, fresh, and mineral with the almond finish typical of grechetto grapes. This wine pairs well with fish dishes and white meats.
