"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." -Gustav Mahler. The Mazzei family has been carrying the torch since 1435 and has a history of producing award winning wine since their inception. The family's Castello di Fonterutoli Estate was one of the first to produce the best-selling Italian wine, Chainti Classico. Twenty-four generations later, through excellence and tradition, they remain one of the premier estates throughout all of Italy.
The Mazzei family has been producing superior wines with passion and unrivaled excellence for over six hundred years. The family has gone to great lengths to implement and maintain sustainability in the vineyard and the estate. With this outstanding Chianti Classico Riserva, the Marquis Mazzei celebrate their notable ancestor Ser Lapo, author of the first official document mentioning “Chianti wine” (December 16th, 1398). The grapes are hand harvested and the final cuvee spends 12 months in small 50% new French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice, fresh berries, roasted tomato and fresh herbs. Fresh, tannic, with aromas of berries, strong structure, earthy and intense taste.Pair along side pasta with game sauce, stews, grilled red meats, and mid-aged cheeses.
There’s cedar and tobacco here, but it’s backed up with lovely, fresh wild strawberries, raspberry cheesecake and redcurrants. Full body, polished tannins and beautifully linear acidity. Finishes long and elegantly. Drink now. ~95 James Suckling
The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo shows both the power and the elegance of this classic vintage. The warm 2015 growing season is known for plump, succulent and exuberant Tuscan reds, and you get all those attributes here. However, the bouquet is very focused and chiseled with sharp cherry, cranberry and dark plum aromas. Dark spice, pressed rose and potting soil are also protagonists of the genuine and straight-shooting bouquet. ~92 Wine Advocate
The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is a wine of power and breadth. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, chalk and white pepper all give the 2015 a distinctive sense of brightness that plays off the richness of the fruit very nicely. A closing burst of bright acid and tannin adds energy. I would give the 2015 at least a few years to come together, as it is presently tightly wound and not fully expressive. ~91 Vinous Media
