About the Wine

Barbera d’Asti is a fine, sophisticated Italian wine that’s almost always an unbelievable value. That’s especially accurate when it comes to the 2018 Montebruna Barbera d'Asti from Giacomo Bologna Braida. In fact, Robert Parker believes the Montebruna is “always a terrific wine,” and it’s “distinguished by its bright acidity.” Of the 2018 in particular, Parker says “there's a lot packed into this bottle.”

What’s packed in there? First of all, there are decades of experience working with the Barbera grape that thrives in Piedmont. The Bologna family has operated Braida since the early 1960s, producing a variety of wines, and the Montebruna Barbera d'Asti is one of the family-owned winery’s finest offerings, grown in their estate vineyard.

Then, there's the grapes nourished in the vineyard, Rochetta Tanara, that lies within the Monferrato Astigiano district. The vineyard is rich with medium consistency sand and clay soils that give the wines a more intensely aromatic and taste spectrum than those grown in looser soils. Experience and well-grown grapes combine to make this 100% Barbera wine an easy-drinking, open tonight, pair-it-with-a-huge-variety-of-foods, Italian classic. Wine Advocate has said that Braida “almost single-handedly invented the concept of Barbera d’Asti.” (Our very loose translation: If you’re going to buy just one producer of Barbera d’Asti, it should probably be Braida.)

Aging: Large oak barrels to age for 1 year

Tasting Notes: 100% Barbera. This ruby-red wine has aromas of ripe cherry, raspberries, and blackberry. The blackberry shines through on the palate, along with white pepper and some almond on the finish. Balanced, lively acidity, and easy to drink, it accompanies pasta dishes, red and white meats, cheeses, and cured meats.

Reviews

"With a beautifully saturated dark color and lots of generous cherry and blackberry, there's a lot packed into this bottle of Braida 2018 Barbera d'Asti Montebruna. The fruit is plump, succulent, and packed tight. Montebruna is distinguished by its bright acidity and you get lots of that here too. This is always a terrific wine. Plus, this production of about 90,000 bottles carries a great price for this category." ~92 Points, Robert Parker.

"Aromas of black-skinned berries, violet, and tilled soil emerge from the glass. The full-bodied, savory palate offers blackberry jam, licorice, and white pepper alongside polished tannins." ~91 Points, Wine Enthusiast.
