With over 50 years of grape-growing expertise, the Laird family has cultivated a remarkable 2000 acres in the Napa Valley and an additional 250 acres in Carneros. Since their early beginnings, Laird has been selling 97% of their grapes to renowned producers, reserving a precious 3% to create their own exceptional wines. This approach isn't just about quality control, it's a dedication to showcasing the finest expressions of each vintage.

The roots of the Laird Family Estate trace back to the early 1970s when Ken and Gail Laird embarked on a journey to transform neglected land into thriving vineyards. Their commitment to family values, meticulous farming, and attention to detail have led to the creation of wines that are a testament to the journey, the land, and the people.

Behind every exceptional bottle of wine stands an exceptional winemaker. Hailing from the upper Midwest and driven by a passion for winemaking, Laird's winemaker, Brian Mox brings a unique blend of classic and modern techniques. From the vineyards to the bottle, the goal is simple: wines that are balanced, refined, and a true reflection of their origin. Brian’s expertise includes working in Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Pine Ridge and with Tony Soter at Etude Wines. 

The 2019 Laird Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon comes from three main vineyards. Most of it (80%) is from the Flat Rock vineyard, with 18% from Linda Vista and a small 2% from Dry Creek Ranch. These grapes are then used at Nickel & Nickel. The place where they process the grapes has room for 73 different winemakers, including well-known ones like Mia Klein, Heidi Barrett (who used to be with Paul Hobbs), Saxum Brown, and Merryvale. This wine mostly uses grapes from the Oak Knoll AVA, which is close to Yountville and Oakville.

2019 was a fabulous year for Napa Valley Cabernet. Wine Spectator awarded this year a 97-point score, and Vinous Media gave it 96 points saying that "The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets have turned out beautifully. 2019 is a very high-quality vintage of Cabernets that will be easy to drink and enjoy with minimal cellaring. The extra kick of late heat softened the tannins, making the wines a pleasure to taste and drink."

Aging: 21 months in French oak, 38% new barrels.

Tasting Notes: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec. The color of a garnet gemstone with delicious aromas of raspberry jam, brown sugar, and red licorice. Flavors of roasted coconut, fresh blackberry, and plum are accompanied by a smooth structure with sturdy tannins and juicy acidity.

Reviews

A juicy, ripe and packed style, with a core of dark currant and boysenberry preserves flanked by singed vanilla and black licorice. Ends with toasty oomph, but with good underlying energy as well. Drink now through 2034. 1,012 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator

Aromas of fresh mint, pine and blackcurrant. Full-bodied with velvety tannins. Iodine and bark on the palate, with a solid core of black fruit. Nicely concentrated. Best after 2025. ~92 James Suckling

All estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Laird's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a reasonable value in the overpriced world of Napa Valley. Aged in a fair bit of new French oak, it offers up scents of cedar, dark chocolate, plum and black cherry. It's full-bodied and a bit more tannic than Jillian's Blend but still open-knit, approachable and easy to drink, with a long, velvety finish. ~92 Robert Parker
