About the Wine

The name of this estate alludes to its history as a Benedictine priory. The allure of Prieure Lichine has been on an upward trend since the middle of the last century and is currently producing some of the greatest wines the estate has ever seen. The estate has built a wonderful reputation thanks to the incredible growing conditions of 2015, and produce high-quality wine time after time.

In 1951, Alexis Lichine, who was often referred to as “the Pope of Wine”, took over the estate and added his name two years later. Thanks to his patient determination, he was able to add more vineyard plots, modernize the cellars, and renovate the monks’ former living quarters. Château Prieuré-Lichine’s fate was linked to that of the Lichine family for nearly half a century.

This new approach to managing widely distributed vineyard plots turned this diversity into advantage, enabling Prieuré- Lichine to express the full complexity of its terroir thanks to an experienced and devoted winemaking team. Today the Ballande family, a prominent Bordeaux negociant, owns the property and the winery has been improving annually.

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new.

Tasting Notes:Red Wine. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Black and red raspberry fruit flavors with hints of cassis and lifted aromatics of dried roses and violets. Pure and pristine in style. Focused and approachable in the balanced finish.

Reviews

Velvet tannins and a wealth of fruit, with a purity give this wine its character. Floral, with loads of dark cherry, plum and boysenberry, licorice, smoke, espresso and wet earth give the wine complexity. This keeps getting better and better each time I taste it. Starting with the initial barrel sample, another tasting in 2017 before bottling and again in bottle, each step of the wine, this is really popped into high gear. This should offer 30 years of pleasure.

Some very ripe dark-plum aromas with a wealth of sweet spices and earthy notes. The palate has an impressively rich, suave and smooth core of black fruit with a powerful palate that delivers concentrated and intense structure. This is superb Margaux. Try from 2022. ~96JS

This is a perfumed wine, rich in black currants and acidity as well as firm tannins. It is concentrated and dense while also elegant. The aftertaste boosts the ripe fruit and balanced acidity. Drink from 2025.~95WE

The 2015 Prieure-Lichine has really come together over the last two years. Sumptuous, bold and racy, with no hard edges or angular contours, the 2015 is all class. The purity of flavors is striking. Bright floral and spice notes perk up the red stone fruit nicely in this sensual, silky Margaux. All the elements simply fall into place. This is the first vintage Stephane Derenoncourt and his team made in the new cellar. The 2015 Prieure-Lichine is a total knock-out. Don't miss it.~95VM
