About the Wine

Founded by Mark Tarlov (Evening Land) and originating in Burgundy, Maison L’Envoyé crafts this region’s wine trinity: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Gamay Noir. Yet from this tenor of focus and commitment, a global fellowship emerged, with terroir-driven Pinot Noir as the linchpin. Driven by the elusive hunt for the world’s finest Pinot Noir sites, Maison L’Envoyé traverses the globe, presenting the many veils of regionality and winemaking style. With winemaking footprints in Burgundy, Willamette Valley, Central Otago, and Tasmania, Maison L’Envoyé champions many unsung growers who have farmed their vineyards for decades and generations, some mere feet away from more illustriously cited neighbors. Maison L’Envoyé has been a standout since launching in 2011 including Wine & Spirits naming it a ‘Winery To Watch’ in 2015.

Beaujolais is one of the best value-driven wine regions in the world! Located just south of Burgundy, Beaujolais produces fantastic fruit-driven wines that are unpretentious and typically meant to be enjoyed in their youth. The 2018 Maison L'Envoye comes from a single-vineyard in Morgon and the best in Beaujolais, Cote du Py. Out of the 7 Crus that make up Beaujolais, Morgon is known as one of the highest-quality regions and it is known to produce the most ageable Beaujolais wines. Wines from this vineyard sell for can sell for over $75 and are the most sought-after wines from Beaujolais.

A semi-carbonic traditional method with 30% whole clusters. The must underwent a long, natural ferment utilizing wild yeasts in open-top vessels with submerged caps. The wine matured over the following 8 months in a combination of small tanks on fine lees and seasoned French oak achieving a subtle integration of oak spice characters and texture.

Aging: 8 months in 100% seasoned French Oak barriques

Tasting Notes:100% Gamay. Powerful aromas of dark berries, blood orange with fennel, and forest floor nuances. The palate is rich and layered yet lively. Blackberry and Christmas cake flavors are balanced by the fresh natural acidity and a well-placed tannin backbone. A serious yet versatile Côte du Py.

Reviews

Vivid ruby. Spice-accented aromas of cherry, black raspberry, and candied licorice, plus a floral accent in the background. Shows fine clarity and spicy lift to the bitter cherry and dark berry flavors, which deepen as the wine opens up. Finishes on a subtly chewy note, with firm, spicy thrust, broad tannins, and very good persistence. ~92 Vinous Media
