The nose is racy, well-managed, and offers depth as well as a very fine and tightly wound grain. The wine benefits from being decanted. There are notes of crushed redcurrants, wild strawberries, and a hint of salinity/iodine, combined with hints of red berries, balsamic, licorice, tobacco, and a very discreet hint of undergrowth. The palate is fresh, and juicy and offers a nice racy minerality, suppleness, crunchiness, a nice gourmandize, freshness, a nice tannic frame, a fine concentration as well as a fine solar side. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fairly ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, and, to a lesser extent, crushed cherry, combined with hints of pulpy blackcurrant, violet, tonka bean, and blond tobacco, as well as a subtle hint of camphor, racy minerality, iodine, salinity, and vanilla. Good length. Fine firmness on the finish. ~93-94 VertdeVin
Dark inky core. Attractive nose of roasted oak, dark berries, cassis, plum and tobacco notes. The palate has good density and concentration, elegant dark fruit, grainy tannin, notes of blackberry and cassis, juicy freshness, and a long lingering finish, well built with very fine potential. ~93 Andreas Larsson
As is often the case with Phélan Ségur, there is an excess of wood in this wine. Sometimes it works, as here, because the big, bold fruits are powerful enough to match the toastiness. That suggests a future as a ripe, black-fruited, and structured wine with room for juicy acidity. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
Lots of violets, sandalwood, currant, and tar character. Subtle and pretty. Full body, fine tannins and a balanced and fresh finish. Pretty wine. Hard not to drink now. Better in 2018. ~91 James Suckling
Deep dark ruby garnet. Restrained nose, very closed. On the palate, however, a very successful wine with sweetness, red fruit, fine velvety tannins, earthy and mineral components. Shows fullness, length, and reverberation. ~91 Falstaff
Offers a dark, dense feel, with layers of fig, blackberry, leather, chestnut, tobacco and loam all carrying through the broad, smoky finish. Features solid fruit, with an ample tug of earth. A solid effort for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2022. 15,000 cases made. ~90 Wine Spectator
