Founded in 1980 by Romano Marengo, Ca’ Rome’ is a family-run winery perched atop the Rabajà hill in Barbaresco, offering a stunning view of the Langhe region. The estate is now managed by Romano’s children—Giuseppe (Pino), Paola, and Maria—alongside their mother, Olimpia. The family’s deep commitment to tradition and quality is reflected in their meticulous approach to vineyard management and winemaking, with grapes sourced from historic parcels in Barbaresco and Serralunga d'Alba.
Barbaresco is a wine of patience and evolution, and the 2019 Maria di Brün embodies this philosophy with remarkable depth and structure. Crafted in limited production (just 2,200 bottles), this vintage showcases the grace and intensity of Nebbiolo from Barbaresco’s finest terroirs. Aromas of fresh cherries, crushed herbs, wild roses, and balsam rise from the glass, while hints of cinnamon, eucalyptus, and earthy tobacco add layers of intrigue. The linear, precise palate delivers vibrant red berries, pomegranate, and dried citrus peel, wrapped in grippy, chalky tannins and electric acidity.
This is a Barbaresco built for the long haul, demanding patience yet rewarding with a silky, fresh, and mineral-laced finish. A true collector’s wine, the 2019 Maria di Brün will reveal its full complexity with time—best enjoyed from 2027 through 2046.
Aging: 30 months in 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, followed by 12 months of bottle aging.
The 2019 Ca’ Rome’ di Romano Marengo Barbaresco Maria di Brün is a powerful yet finely detailed expression of Nebbiolo. Aromas of fresh cherries, crushed herbs, wild roses, and balsam are layered with cinnamon, eucalyptus, and earthy tobacco. The palate is linear and precise, revealing flavors of red berries, pomegranate, and dried citrus peel, framed by firm, chalky tannins and electric acidity. A long, fresh, and mineral-laced finish hints at the wine’s remarkable aging potential.
Fresh cherry, crushed herb, dried flower and citrus peel aromas and flavors. Some tree bark, too. Medium-bodied, firm and linear on the palate with chalky tannins, that are a little chewy. Quite delicate with juicy red cherries and hints of dried herbs on the silky finish. Needs some time to express itself. Better after 2026. ~95 James Suckling
This red is tightly wound and packed with cherry, strawberry, rose hip and subtle earth and tobacco flavors. Reveals a eucalyptus note as this plays out on the juicy finish, where dusty tannins reign. Best from 2027 through 2046. ~92 Wine Spectator
The 2019 Barbaresco Maria di Brun is a potent, strapping wine. There's plenty of fruit impact and overall intensity, but the tannins are also pretty intense. I am not sure they will ever soften entirely. Dark red cherry, cinnamon, pomegranate, new leather and sweet oak are front and center. It will be interesting to see if time softens some of the edges, although I am not sure that will happen.~92 Vinous
Aromas of cranberries and raspberries dusted with dried thyme and wild roses spill from the glass. As the aromas evolve, the pretty palate showcases the high-toned red berry fruits framed by supple tannins and electric acidity finishing with subtle hints of crushed chalk. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
The 2019 Barbaresco Maria Di Brun has a musky bouquet of baked cherries, baking spices, cedar, and balsamic herbs. It’s a grippy little wine, with ripe, building tannins and a drying feel. Persistent, but a touch clunky, it has an autumnal feel with some more developing notes. It is classic Barbaresco and good for drinking over the next several years. ~90 Jeb Dunnuck
