Luce was the first wine from Montalcino made by blending Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. It was thanks to the collaboration of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi Families that came the idea of matching the roundness and softness of Merlot with the elegance and structure of Sangiovese in the land of Brunello di Montalcino, the worldwide famous Italian wine made strictly from Sangiovese grapes.
The 2016 vintage, distinguished as it was for its regular weather conditions free of excessive rain or heat, possesses a distinctive “terroir” effect further enhanced by the excellent conditions at the end of summer and during the harvest, which allowed the grapes to reach a wonderful ripeness. 2016 was one of the best vintages in Italy over the last 20 years!
Tasting notes: The wine is rich and deep in color accompanied by an aromatic bouquet of fresh fruit. The palate is driven by a smoothness distinguished by elegant and subtle tannins that, while present, does not overwhelm the palate. This is a sincere and succulent wine that offers balance, fruitiness, density, and an elegant finish.
A ripe but suggestive nose of dark cherries, dark chocolate, hot stones, cassis, brambleberry pie and bark. Yet, on the palate, this paints an altogether different picture, in which sleek tannins carry fresh layers of forest fruit long, through a compact, full-bodied palate. Powerful acidity steers it through to a restrained but chewy finish. Drink from 2024. ~96JS
