The Belpoggio estate of about 10 hectares, half of which are dedicated to Sangiovese and the other part to olive groves. It is located in Castelnuovo Abbot, in the town of Montalcino just 500 meters from the famous Abbey of St Antimo. The vineyard's location is considered one of the best for Sangiovese and allows the natural elements to produce wines of unparalleled quality. Established in 2005, Belpoggio is quickly becoming one of the best Brunello producers in all of Italy!
The vineyard has a southwest exposure. After harvest, the wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation for 15 to 18 days, is aged in 60-gallon oak casks for 24 to 36 months, and finally, the flavors are allowed to marry in bottle for 6 to 9 months before leaving the winery.
Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 100% Sangiovese. In the glass, the wine is deep ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose, the wine opens up with a bright bouquet of fresh black cherry, red currant, roasted tomato, dried flowers, tomato leaf, clay, and a hint of balsamic. On the palate, the wine is full of pure red fruits with a hint of earthy compliments. The 2015 Belpoggio Brunello is a perfect complement to red meat, game, and aged cheeses.
Vintage Report from James Suckling:
"The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."
Crystalline ideas developed by the Martellozzo family, confirmed by the highest quality of their wine releases, as usual. An excellent character for the year 2015: intensity on the nose, a great spiciness along with an extraordinary roundness in the mouth. Fragrance of tannins and a juicy taste ending with a convincing persistence. ~97 Luca Gardini, The Wine Notes
Powerful and concentrated but elegant. Fine-grained tannins and brisk acidity provide the framework and allow red berries, cherries, and plums to shine, ably complemented by more elemental earthy, herbal, and salt elements. ~95 Decanter
A medium-to-full-bodied Brunello with a tight, chewy tannic structure, dusty texture, and juicy fruit. The tannins are showing some edges now. Give them two to three years to come together. Best after 2023. ~92 James Suckling
