In a vintage known for its intensity and structure, 2022 Château Clerc Milon emerges as a wine of power, precision, and polish. The estate, long associated with rich, textured Pauillac expressions, has crafted a wine that balances the vintage’s exuberance with elegance, channeling the strength of its clay-limestone terroir into something both bold and refined.

A blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenère, the wine opens with fragrant blackberries, raspberries, and plums, mingling with delicate hints of rose petals, graphite, and pencil shavings. Beneath the surface, there’s an undercurrent of cocoa bean, slate, and white pepper, a signature of the estate’s old-vine Carmenère, lending an exotic lift to the wine’s aromatics.

On the palate, layers of cassis, dark cherries, and espresso unfold slowly, guided by a frame of chalky tannins and fresh acidity. It’s supple yet defined, plush yet structured, with an almost effortless drive and precision that extends through the long, mineral-laced finish. Silky and approachable now, but with the backbone to age beautifully for decades, this is a modern classic in the making.

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels (55% new), enhancing depth and complexity while preserving the wine’s lively, pure fruit.

Critical Reviews

The finest example of the château I've tasted, the 2022 Château Clerc Milon is deep purple-hued with a sensational perfume of crème de cassis, spring flowers, spicy oak, and graphite. It's full-bodied, concentrated, has a weightless mouthfeel, and beautiful tannins, all making for a riveting Pauillac. It needs a decade of bottle age to hit prime time, but this is another truly special 2022 that readers should pounce on.~97 Jeb Dunnuck

So much Pauillac character with lead pencil, currants and red fruit. Orange peel and slightly burnt oranges. Medium-bodied, this has creamy and crunchy tannins as well as dried citrus and a flavorful finish. Lovely drive to this exquisite, energetic wine. Drink after 2028. ~96 James Suckling

Powerfuland structured, the wine has weight as well as ripe tannins. As always in this vintage, the wine's acidity keeps everything fresh and bright enough to lift the wine's fine fruit. ~94-96 Wine Enthusiast

The 2022 Clerc Milon is beautiful, offering up aromas of cherries, raspberries and plums mingled with hints of pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's taut and lively, with a vibrant core of fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. Its clay-limestone terroir lends it a distinctive signature that sets it apart from the rest of the portfolio. ~93-95 WA

Bright blackcurrants and soft florals on the nose. Plump, plush, and friendly, this has immediate juiciness with soft, cushioned tannins that give a crisp grip. Fresh and fruity with a broad mid-palate, though not the longest. The mint chocolate cooling effect on the finish is delightful. Well-balanced in texture and body, making it highly accessible. A crowd-pleaser with mouthwatering appeal, bottled in June. Easygoing but well-crafted, this offers pure drinking pleasure. 3.78pH. No new oak. ~92 Decanter
