Beaujolais is one of the best value-driven wine regions in the world! Located just south of Burgundy, Beaujolais produces fantastic fruit-driven wines that are unpretentious and typically meant to be enjoyed in their youth. This wine comes from Morgon, from a single vineyard called
Le Clachet, planted with 60-year-old vines. Out of the 7 Crus that makeup Beaujolais, Morgon is known as one of the highest-quality regions and it is known to produce the most ageable Beaujolais wines. Wines from this vineyard sell for can sell for over $75 and are the most sought-after wines from Beaujolais.
The Beaujolais resurgence is being led in a big part by women winery owners and winemakers. One of those women is Anita Kuhnel who owns Domaine Anita. A 2021 regional report by James Suckling called her out specifically. Noting that she founded the Domaine in 2015, the report comments that “her twin obsessions with quality and strictly vinifying each plot of vineyard separately earned her two 95-plus ratings in our report. Her wines are concentrated and plush.”
Anita’s viticultural philosophy is one of sustainable viticulture, with minimal treatments, green harvesting, and strong canopy management. Assisted by Guy Marion, former head of winemaking at Georges Duboeuf, she produces several excellent wines, like this 2020 Domaine Anita Morgon 'Prestige' Beaujolais, a wine that has been highly praised by James Suckling in its 95pt review, where he called it "dense, concentrated, and ripe with serious tannins, but a wonderfully plush texture on the expansive palate."
In Suckling’s report, he noted that only 10% of the wines from the region received a score of 95 or better. That makes this wine one of the top 10% wines in the entire region. Those who already are sold on the Beaujolais resurgence and those who are curious to taste what it’s all about should jump on this excellent wine that’s also a fantastic value.
On top of that, 2020 was a very good vintage for Beaujolais, one that Vinous Media awarded with 90 points stating that "2020
display depth as well as juiciness, much like the best examples from 2019."
100% Gamay from 60-year-old vines. Notes of toasted bread and fruitiness dominated by black cherries. On the palate, the tannins are coated, and unctuous. This wine has amazing aging potential.
Welcome to the black heart of Morgon! So dense, concentrated, and ripe with serious tannins, but a wonderfully plush texture on the expansive palate. Then the mineral freshness pushes through at the powerful, yet finely etched finish. If you can find actual black cherries that smell like this, then let me know! Drink or hold. ~95 Points, James Suckling.
Volcanic rock subsoil in this Gamay vineyard gives this wine strength and density. It has structure as well as black fruits, offering tannins, concentration, and plenty of aging potential. Drink this ripe, full-bodied wine from 2024.~93 Points, Wine Enthusiast.
