If you're a fan of Saint-Emilion Grand Cru but not a fan of the high price tags, this is the wine for you. Château Haut Musset, located just a stone’s throw from the iconic (and pricey) Saint-Emilion Grand Cru AOC, brings you all the elegance and charm of its famous neighbor—at a fraction of the cost. This is a Bordeaux steal, available exclusively at Big Hammer Wines.

Château Haut Musset’s story begins in the 16th century, but it took a significant leap forward in 2014 when it was acquired by Jacques Rambeaud, a passionate vigneron committed to sustainable winemaking. The estate, nestled in Montagne Saint-Emilion, is part of a trio of vineyards run by the Rambeaud family, which includes Château Grand Moulin Macquin and Clos Albertus in Saint George Saint-Emilion. This winery’s focus is on preserving tradition while embracing innovation.

Jacques Rambeaud, now the proud owner, has elevated the estate by implementing sustainable viticulture practices under the guidelines of HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale). These eco-friendly measures ensure that the land is preserved for future generations. The result? A wine that is not only crafted with the utmost care for the environment but also expresses the full potential of its unique terroir.

Château Haut Musset’s vineyards benefit from the region’s famed clay-limestone soils, enriched with the local “crasse de fer” (iron-rich clay), known for imparting complexity and structure to the wines. These soils are a signature feature of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, and they play a crucial role in the development of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the key varietals in this wine.

The vines, many of which are decades old, are carefully tended throughout the growing season. Practices like green harvesting and leaf thinning are employed to ensure that only the healthiest grapes make it into the final blend. This attention to detail, combined with a minimal intervention approach in the cellar, allows the natural character of the land to shine through in every bottle.

Let’s be honest—finding this kind of quality at this price is rare. Château Haut Musset gives you everything you love about Saint-Emilion but without the premium cost that comes with the prestigious name. This small, 10-acre estate produces wines with the same finesse and depth as its neighboring Grand Crus but without the Grand Cru price tag.

With only 100 cases imported into the U.S., this is an exclusive opportunity to experience top-tier Bordeaux at an incredible value. Available only at Big Hammer Wines.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

This beauty is all about harmony. It opens with aromas of ripe cherries, plum, and blackberry, followed by hints of spice, leather, and a touch of earthy minerality. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, with layers of juicy dark fruit complemented by fine, silky tannins and just the right amount of oak. The finish is long and satisfying, with a delicate balance between freshness and depth. Pair this Bordeaux with chicken parmesan, lamb chops, or a baked brie for a match made in culinary heaven.

Intense aromas of ripe plums and blackberries with hints of chocolateand wet earth. Medium to full-bodied with chewy tannins and a deep, compact fruit core. Rich finish with hints of crushed stones. Try after 2024. ~91 James Suckling.
