Nestled in the heart of the renowned Saint-Julien appellation, Château Lagrange stands proudly as a Third Classified Growth in the Bordeaux 1855 classification.
For nearly two centuries, Lagrange remained within the same family, preserving its unity. One of its most charismatic figures, Charles de Branne de Cours, guided the domain from 1712 to 1746, alongside his Bordeaux relatives who also managed Mouton.Together, they transformed Lagrange into a gem of Médoc viticulture. In 1787, Thomas Jefferson bestowed upon Lagrange the esteemed rank of Third Classified Growth.
As time marched on, Lagrange changed hands, each contributing to its rich history. But it was Count Duchâtel who truly elevated Lagrange between 1842 and 1875. The Tuscan-style tower, designed by the Italian architect Visconti, added elegance and uniqueness to the Château.
Assisted by his faithful estate manager, Galos, Duchâtel introduced innovative techniques, such as using sulphur to combat powdery mildew and pioneering a groundbreaking soil drainage system in the vineyard. Lagrange became a hub of High Society, hosting grand receptions and gatherings of artists who drew inspiration from the enchanting landscapes.
A new era began when the family group, Suntory, acquired Lagrange. Under the leadership of Marcel Ducasse, a graduate of the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology, alongside Kenji Suzuta and Keiichi Shiina, a comprehensive revitalization project was launched. Over three decades of dedication, Lagrange regained its prestigious standing.
Today, under the guidance of Matthieu Bordes and his team, Lagrange's legacy continues. Eric Boissenot, the esteemed consultant oenologist, collaborates with the property's four oenologists to craft wines that epitomize the elegant Saint-Julien style. Each year, they meticulously select the blend that will grace your glass in the winter following the harvest.

The 2021 Lagrange turned out beautifully. Succulent red cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco, spice and mocha infuse the 2021 with gorgeous depth. Soft, succulent and inviting, Lagrange is wonderfully appealing. It will drink well with minimal cellaring. ~94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Showing better from bottle than barrels, the 2021 Château Lagrange has a healthy ruby/purple hue to go with a gorgeous nose of blackcurrants, violets, chalky minerality, and graphite. It's rich, medium-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's a seriously impressive, layered, concentrated 2021 with tons to love. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 21 months in 50% new barrels. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15+. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Lagrange is a strong effort, offering up notes of dark berries, pencil shavings, licorice and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated palate with lively acids and youthfully structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish, reflecting the record-high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. This is one 2021 that will reward a bit of patience. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A firm and silky red with medium body, fresh acidity and an orange-peel and berry aftertaste. Refined and bright. ~93 James Suckling
Super-floral on the nose, a celebration of peony, violet and rose flowers. Juicy and supple with a real life-force. The starts off bright and upfront with strawberry and red cherry notes that merge into a darker, more savoury mid-palate full of slate and chocolate. I like the persistence here, the clarity of the fruit expression and the brightness. It's not the most expansive but the individual elements are so well presented with detail on show. A great effort in the vintage with no drop in the mid-palate, acidity in check and nice floral fruit. ~93 Decanter
