Château Desmirail started as part of the very large Rauzan vineyard, which eventually split off as part of a dowry paid to Jean Desmirail (where it takes its name). This estate has been in the hands of several important Bordeaux families (like Château Malescot St Exupery’s and Château Palmer’s owners) all of which contributed to significant and positive changes.

Since 1980, was acquired by the Lurton family, who have been doing an outstanding job of turning it into a truly top-notch Châteaux. It has become a favorite among Margaux enthusiasts due to its incredible value.

The Lurton family is Bordeaux royalty, this family owns over 20 estates, including 6 classified growths like Brane-Cantenac, and Haut-Bages Libéral.

Château Desmirail covers over 50 acres of vineyards located in different areas of the appellation, with a terroir characterized by deep gravel terroir from the Quaternary period, each of these vineyards contributes a special characteristic to the production of this stunning 3rd growth. The vineyards are placed in Margaux-Cantenac (adjacent to Brane-Cantenac, Rauzan-Ségla, and Palmer) Soussan, Arsac (next to Château du Tertre), and some hectares in Haut-Medoc.

The vineyards are sustainable, and since 2018, they achieved the HEV3 certification. The Lurton family believes “The production of high-quality grapes begins with the soil.” The combination of Margaux’s soil and the expertise of Eric Boissenot is the perfect formula to create this work of art.

2018 was an epic vintage for Bordeaux’ Left Bank. 2018 was blessed with 96 Points by Vinous Media, Robert Parker and Wine Spectator. The last one states that “the best reds are dense and tannic, with terrific drive and definition.”

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Always a charming, balanced Margaux, the 2018 Château Desmirail reveals a dense purple/plum color to go with a terrific nose of ripe red and blue fruits as well as complex sandalwood, flowery incense, spice, and tobacco. Beautifully textured, medium-bodied, and already complex, it has ripe, silky tannins and just loads of character. I'd be happy to have bottles in the cellar. It's going to evolve for 15-20 years. ~93+ Jeb Dunnuck

Lilac, warmed black currant preserve and incense notes work together to define this caressing wine, while subtle mineral, bay and warm earth notes support the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2033. 4,583 cases made. ~92 Wine Spectator

This has an earthier nose of blackberries, dried earth, bark, oyster shells and cloves. Medium-bodied with fine, tea-like tannins. Savory, mineral and tight. Drink after 2022. ~92 James Suckling

Tight tanninsand dark fruits; powerful and confident. There are some ferocious tannins here that make it a little atypical for Margaux, but there is real promise, with some appealing berry fruits. ~90 Decanter
