Trimbach is one of the Top Alsace producers. They produce the highest-quality premium Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines, which constantly achieve great accolades. If you want to discover the true power and aging capacity of a high-quality Riesling, Maison Trimbach should be at the top of your list. This Maison is crafting some of the most exceptional white wines in the world.
Wine Spectator said, “In Alsace, although most wines tend to be dry and fuller-bodied than their German counterparts, Trimbach's house style is quite the opposite: graceful and intense, with an austere character.”
This Maison has been around since the 16th century when the Trimbach family arrived from Switzerland. Twelve generations of disruptive winemakers have impregned their expertise into Trimbach. Today, Pierre Trimbach, an enologist who graduated from Beaune, is leading this world-renowned estate.
Trimbach’s location couldn’t be more perfect. Its semi-continental weather brings extreme temperatures, with very cold winters, which are optimal for high-quality Riesling to thrive. The soil is composed of marl-limestone-sandstone and shell limestone (Muschelkalk), which gives Trimbach's wines a remarkable personality.
The 140-acre vineyard is planted with vines of 50 years of age on average. They’re distributed in some of the best terroirs in Alsace: Ribeauvillé, Bergheim y Hunawihr. Each of them provides different and exciting characteristics to the wines.
Trimbach’s vineyards are managed under sustainable practices and certified by the HVE3. For more than 10 years, they’ve been doing fully organic viticulture.
If you enjoy bright, acidic, and aromatic whites like Pinot Grigio or occasionally sip on Sauvignon Blanc, it's time to give Riesling a try. It's wonderfully refreshing, effortlessly approachable, and often overlooked simply because it’s not as widely known or available as its more famous counterparts.
100% Riesling. Don’t just take our 20 years of expertise into consideration, see the unanimous reviews below. A special vintage that’s amazing to drink now and that will live at least until 2030 and beyond. If you’re reading this and not buying this wine, your loss.
The gorgeous, mineral-laced nose leads to a mouthwatering range of Honeycrisp apple, nectarine, ginger pastry cream, lemon curd, smoke and star anise flavors in this long and creamy white. Supple, displaying beautiful tension from the finely meshed, racy acidity. Drink now through 2028. 2,000 cases made, 400 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator
A smoky, mineral wine with quite a lean body, but the acidity and discrete tannins support it well. It tastes much less austere than the nose suggests. A long lemon and mineral finish with some complexity.Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling
Made for the first time in 2009 (then in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016), the 2015 Riesling Sélection de Vieilles Vignes is a blend of Mühlforst, Rosacker, Haguenau and Vorderer Haguenau(the south-facing, 3-hectare vineyard, where Trimbach holds one hectare with 70+-year-old vines in high-density plantings called "little Geisberg"). The wine opens with a generous but precise and elegant nose of white, ripe fruits. Deep and complex on the mineral-structured palate, this is a highly expressive, very elegant, dense and balanced Riesling with a long, pretty intense and aromatic finish and a lingering salinity. This is a remarkably good and intense Riesling on 1er cru level. ~92 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Bright straw-yellow. The very floral nose also hints at liquid minerals, minty herbs and marzipan. Then lemony fresh, featuring a peppery, zingy acidity that nicely frames the flavors of ripe orchard fruit, fennel and licorice. Clearly, this is more penetrating and has stronger, more intense flavors than the Riesling Réserve. Not made every year but only in exceptional ones, for “… the key when making this wine is not to impoverish our Riesling Réserve by diverting grapes to yet another wine. In 2015, we could do that without worries,” said the Trimbachs almost in unison. Very classy wine from grapes grown mainly on the marly calcaire soils of the Hagueneau; this will last, but is deceptively easy to drink now.
Jean Trimbach was but one of many Alsace _vignerons who commented that 2015 was an outlier year, with “…essentially no water falling from the skies from the end of May to August 15; and I repeat, not one drop”. His brother Pierre added that “… the very small berries and thick skins explain a lot about the taste of wines from this vintage”. If all that sounds a little ominous, the good news for wine lovers (and collectors) is that Pierre also believes that the 2015 wines will prove similar to those of 1971, which is not just one of Alsace’s all-time greatest vintages, but, for what it’s worth, but also my favorite all time modern Alsace vintage (along with 1967), so I’d say that’s good news indeed. This storied estate now owns 52 hectares (128 acres) of vines as they recently bought two hectares in the heart of the Brand Grand Cru, which is widely considered the best part. You might think that Trimbach is going “cru-crazy” (the estate also bottles a wine labeled Geisberg, while their cuvée M will soon be renamed with the Mandelberg Grand Cru name, which is what the “M” stands for), since Jean and Pierre Trimbach were once among the most opposed to the Grand Cru system. During my visit, the usual Trimbach stars (Clos and the Fréderic Emile) shone brightly, but I found the entry-level wines (Muscat, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc) to be also especially noteworthy. ~92 Vinous Media
