About the Wine

Etna DOC is located between Catania and Messina on the eastern coast of Sicily, very close to an active volcano named Mount Etna, a World UNESCO Heritage site. The terroir is out of this world, it features an incredible combination of fine ash, hardened lava, and sand. This results in extremely unique wines, which are the most genuine interpretation of Sicilian culture. If you want to learn more about this wonderful wine region, click here.

James Suckling once said, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir are among the most delicate grapes in the world, producing world-class wines with power and finesse. If you have ever thought about an alternative that shows the beauty of both these grapes, Etna Rosso wines should be top of your list.” We agree Etna DOC is a hidden gem and a paradise for adventurous wine lovers.

This exquisite red wine captures the very essence of Sicily’s volcanic terroir.

Since 1906, Giovanni Rosso has been synonymous with the finest wines of Piedmont. Under the meticulous care of the Rosso family, each vineyard has been nurtured to produce wines that are highly distinguishable, terroir by terroir.

In 2016, Giovanni Rosso expanded their horizons to Sicily, acquiring the Etna estate in the picturesque hamlet of Solicchiata, Castiglione di Sicilia. This bold move has resulted in a wine that is as captivating as the volcanic landscape it hails from. The 2020 Etna Rosso Sicilia embodies the spirit of Etna, with a penetrating, bloody red color and a bouquet that bursts with the zest of orange or kumquat, firm berries, and a medley of spices.

Davide Rosso, (son of Giovanni Rosso) is a winemaker with international experience, has been at the helm of the winery since 2001. With a background that spans from the prestigious vineyards of Burgundy to the historic estates of Bordeaux, Davide brings a contemporary perspective to the age-old traditions of winemaking. His innovative approach and respect for the seasons have redefined the vineyards, ensuring that each bottle of Giovanni Rosso wine is a masterpiece of strength, structure, and elegance.

Tasting Notes: 100% Nerello Mascalese. Fine and penetrating aroma, violet, bergamot, bush and wet stone, hints of white pepper. Succulent and progressive, delicate tannins and lively acidity. The finish is strong and savory.

Reviews

Soft red, beautifully pale jewel-like colour, brings you right into the heart of Etna, transparent and yet intense. Fresh acidity, orange peel, brushed leather, redcurrant. This is distinctive, with subtle intensity that builds slowly, never anything other than easy to love. The oyster shell salinity on the finish speaks of the limestone and volcanic soils. Clings on, sappy and mouthwatering. Harvest mid October, fermented in stainless steel vats, ageing in large sized oak vats. 5.5ha estate, vines planted 1975. Winemaker Andrea Delpiano. ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bdx

Bright pink flowers, roses and strawberry fruit on the nose. Lively and expressive, fragrant and inviting. Smooth and succulent, a juicy and vibrant acidity on the mid palate with an iron tang, bitter orange and salty, oyster, iron, stone finish that is a touch dry but more mineral than unpleasant. Aspects of peppery spice and dried herbs on the finish leaving a sunny, warm expression. Nice clarity and precision with bite and a spicy tang. 15,500 bottles produced. ~93 Decanter
