About the Wine

Argiano's roots go way back to Roman times, possibly named after 'Ara Janus' or 'the land of the River Orcia.' In the 16th century, the noble Pecci family built the grand villa Bell’Aria for its fresh air.

Around 400 years ago, Argiano started making wine when they built their cellar. In 1616, Bartolomeo Gherardini's manuscript mentioned their olive oil production too.

Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli led Argiano and even poets like Carducci praised their wine. Carducci once said, "I enjoy Argiano's wine; it's excellent."

Argiano achieved gold at the Brussels Food Fair in 1932 and featured in the 1935 Italian wine exhibition. In 1967, they played a vital role in creating the Consortium for Brunello of Montalcino. In 1992, Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano took over and made the famous Supertuscan, Solengo, with oenologist Giacomo Tachis.

Since 2013, Bernardino Sani has been leading Argiano. They made history in 2019 as the first plastic-free company in Montalcino. They focus on reducing waste, recycling, and reusing materials.

Aging: 30 months in Slavonian and French oak barrels

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Brunello is Argiano’s soul and identity: elegant, fine, and at the same time, body and long aging. Fresh, complex and fruity nose with balsamic and meaty end notes. In the mouth it is very vertical with strong but silky and well blended tannins and a distinct sapidity that makes it very gastronomic

Reviews

Rose, strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors are the main themes in this red, along with wild herb, mineral and cut hay accents. Racy and full of energy, with a long, saturated finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 9,400 cases made, 3,504 cases imported. ~95 Wine Spectator, #1 Wine of the Year

A bright and fresh 2018 with cherry and floral aromas and flavors. Medium body, refined tannins and a linear finish with bright acidity. Tangy and energetic. Tight at the end. A year or two will open it, but already a beauty. ~94 James Suckling

Pure and noble, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino is compelling in its expressive layers yet remains transparent, with aromas of fresh leather, red cherry, cedar, anise, and fresh pine all intertwining. It is medium-bodied but fills out with wonderful purity in its notes of blood orange, raspberry, saline minerals, and mouthwatering acidity. It is a gorgeous wine to hold another couple of years and best after 2025. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

Scents of fresh rose petals unfurl in the glass, signaling a high-toned Brunello that is packed with tangy red cherry and berry flavors. There's plenty of power and depth here, but also a delicacy in the intense floral aromas and finely honed tannins that combine immediate appeal with excellent aging potential. ~94 Wine & Spirits

With the black label, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals dried fruit aromas with cola, grilled herb, candied orange peel and earthy clay. This is a mid-weight Brunello with silky tannins and a long finish. It displays a savory and spicy personality with hints of dried fruit and baked plum that add a fleeting point of sweetness. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Elegant violets, red cherry, and earthy tar on the nose. Fine tannins with very good length and bright acidity. ~93 Decanter

Bright, flint ruby red. The precise nose of raspberries, watermelon, sweet spices and liquorice, in the background subtle notes of citrus. Clear and bright on the palate, showing fine warm-hearted fruit, currently some loosely knit tannin on the finish. ~92 Falstaff
