About the Wine

Robert Parker said it best when he stated about this wine: “It's more about the place than the grape”. This wine comes from San Pablo, a privileged region in the Valle de Uco. San Pablo IG is located just 300 meters from the Andes Mountains! Can you imagine that magnificent view?

Fósil Chardonnay is a mountain wine. The terroir is unmatched: Cold climate (which allows the perfect development of the Chardonnay) calcareous soils of alluvial origin and a landscape that is simply out of this world!

The surname Zuccardi has a well-deserved reputation in the wine industry worldwide. This family is not only responsible for producing some of the best Argentinian wines, but they also have the best wine tourism experience in the entire world: For the third consecutive year, Zuccardi Valle de Uco has been named "The Best Vineyard in the World" by the recognized magazine and digital media company, William Reed Business Medi.

This family business founded by engineer Alberto Zuccardi in 1963, has 6 different estates strategically placed in some of the best wine-growing areas of Mendoza. Today, it is directed by Sebastián Zuccardi, Alberto's grandson.

Sebastián is a visionary and innovative agronomist and winemaker who has made great strides and improvements since he took over the winery. Among other important achievements, he started and promoted a department of research and development that studies the terroir of the region, in order to better understand the land and improve the quality of their wines. Sebastian says: "We don’t look for perfect wines, but those that express the place, the region”.

The winery was built in 2013 and is a tribute to the majestic Andes mountains that surround it. Zuccardi Wines is sustainable in all aspects, from the vineyard to the cellar and even the architecture, where the construction is made with natural elements from the area. The wines are vinified in basins and amphoras allowing a more natural result and with the least possible human intervention.

2019 was an outstanding year for the Uco Valley. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated this vintage with 95 points! A fresh year that resulted in elegant, refreshing, and aromatic white wines.

Tasting Notes: 100% Chardonnay. This is an elegant and exciting wine. With aromas of dried apple and lemon zest. The palate is vibrant and complex with perfectly balanced acidity. This is the perfect Chardonnay to pair with white meats, seafood, and creamy pasta.

Reviews

The 2019 Fósil San Pablo is a Chardonnay from San Pablo that follows the steps of the 2018, with its moderate alcohol and notable acidity and freshness. It comes from grapes planted at 1,400 meters above sea level in the coolest place possible. It's citrusy and has notes of aromatic herbs with restraint. On the palate, it's vibrant and very dry, with marked chalkiness. It's more about the place than the grape. 4,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019. ~95 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

This mostly concrete-produced chardonnay shows freshness and complexitywith dried apple, stone, and lemon rind. Honeysuckle, too. Lovely creaminess. Undertone of salt. No malo. Tangy and intense. One for the cellar. Drink now or hold.” ~95 James Suckling.

A Chardonnay from San Pablo, Uco Valley, made with direct pressing and fermented with native yeasts in concrete eggs and 500 liters French barrels with no must. A yellowy-green in the glass, the nose contains aromas of country herbs, resin, apple, pears, peas, and a hint of cardamom. Complex and intriguing, the 2019 Fósil Zuccardi has a powerful texture in the mouth and sustained flavor with heightened but contained freshness that comes in with a kick at the end. This white, Sebastian Zuccardi's best, is influenced by the wines of Burgundy. ~95 Vinous Media.

The cold climates of the Uco Valley have redefined Mendoza's Chardonnay and Fósil is a good example of why. Created by Sebastián Zuccardi with grapes from the San Pablo GI (1,400m) it is mostly aged in concrete (30% in used barrels) and is a vivid color in the glass, with aromas of green apple, citrus, and white flowers. In the mouth, it presents exhilaratingly vivacious acidity – perfect for accompanying oysters or grilled fish. Drinking Window 2020 – 2028 ~95 Decanter.
