About the Wine

Why is the Wine from the Pope so exciting to taste? Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or “The Pope's new castle” Appellation is one of the most acclaimed wines throughout France, and as its name implies, this Appellation has everything to do with the Pope.

Pope Clement V, who was previously Archbishop of Bordeaux, transferred the papacy to the region of Avignon. As lovers of Bordeaux wines, the Popes confirmed that there was great winemaking potential for Avignon viticulture. The wines produced here began to be known as "Le Vin de Pape" or "The Pope's Wine" which later became as it is known today: Châteauneuf-du-Pape".

La Ferme du Mont is located in Valréas, in the famous Côte d'Azur, one of the most paradisiacal regions in France and probably the entire world. Valréas is known as “L’Enclave des Papes” or, the Enclave of the Popes because Pope John XXII acquired this region for the Avignon papacy in 1317.

The vineyard is composed of more than 120 acres spanning the sub-appellations of Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Châteauneuf and Châteauneuf Vendanges d'Octobre in the Rhône Valley. The vines are old and the Garnacha is the main protagonist.

Stephane Vedeau, founder, owner and winemaker, has managed to position the winery among the most popular in the region. Stephane comes from a family of winemakers and shares with them the same passion for producing high-quality wines. Stephane pays special attention to the vineyard, which he manages in the most natural way possible. Since 2011 they have cultivated the grapes with 100% biodynamic practices, without using pesticides or fertilizers.

Cotes Capelan is the flagship wine and gem of La Ferme Du Mont. 2017 La Ferme du Mont 'Cotes Capelan' Chateauneuf-du-Pape is made with 80% Grenache which comes from vines up to 100 years old and is complemented with Syrah and Mourvèdre in equal parts. 10% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels for approximately 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. Lovely red color. Aromas of black licorice, red and black fruits, hints of cocoa, olives and truffles. Silky and firm structure at the same time. On the palate, the 2017 La Ferme du Mont 'Cotes Capelan' Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is generous, very centered in its mineral power. Great length and impressive fluidity. Pair this wine with a grilled lamb or spicy food.

Reviews

The top bottled wine here is the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan, which is about 80% Grenache, with Mourvèdre and Syrah accounting for the balance. It starts off a bit closed, so splash it around or decant it a bit in advance of serving to see floral notes blossom, followed by mixed red and black cherries and berries. Medium to full-bodied, it's incredibly silky and long on the licorice-tinged finish. ~96 Points, Wine Advocate

The flagship is the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Capelan, and in 2017 it’s 80% Grenache, and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre brought up in 70% new barrel (although you wouldn’t know it by tasting it). Already complex and layered, with fabulous notes of saddle leather, smoked black fruits, garrigue and lavender, this beauty is full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, yet has stunning purity and freshness. It’s up with the gems of the vintage. ~94-97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
