Fulvio Marcucci in the 1960s was way ahead of the pack. He and his wife, Renata, purchased some 25 acres of woodland that formed a natural amphitheater on the southwest side of Montalcino, with an eye to planting vines and olive trees. Fast forward nearly 50 years and these vineyards are in their prime, and Fulvio’s granddaughter, Gemma, is crafting vibrant, energetic Brunello wines that are now starting to make waves in the wider wine world. Accompanied by her father, Giancarlo, the duo is quickly becoming one of the most sought after producers from Tuscany. Find out why the wine world is going nuts for this up & coming producer.

The three estate vineyards were planted between 1968 and 2000, and today average 20 to 50 years in age. The Marcucci family produces less than 6,000 bottles of Brunello each vintage from a small eight acres of vines. Compared to the majority of Brunello producers San Carlo's production is minuscule. These wines are ready to bless the palates of the lucky few who can capture these elusive wines!

San Carlo's 2015 Brunello is cultivated from three estate-owned and planted vineyards. Totaling eight acres at some 1,050 feet, the hand-harvested vines are located near the small town of Tavernelle, southwest of Montalcino. Surrounded by nearly 20 acres of forest the complex soils are a mix of sand, limestone, and clayFermented takes place with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks producing an authentic and pure expression of one of Italians most sought-after wines.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."

Aromas of black cherries and rust with some terracotta and stone. Full body and soft, round tannins that follow through with energy at the end. Structured and intense. Long finish. Better in 2021. ~94 James Suckling

Deep red-ruby. Brooding aromas of red cherry, black cherry pit, mocha, and licorice. Chewy and firmly tannic, offering rich bitter cherry and cocoa flavors plus a sexy note of sweet tobacco. The tannins gain strength on the finish, which is quite saline and lingers nicely. ~92 Vinous Media

Held for three years in bottle, the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers more depth and richness, with gamey red and black fruits, tobacco leaf, and cedary herb aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, elegant, and lightly textured, it's nicely balanced and has outstanding length as well as a great finish. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
