Here's what wine critic Jeb Dunnuck says about 2018 Bordeaux:
"In short, 2018 is a thrilling vintage with no shortage of legendary wines and I cannot imagine anyone who purchases these wines will be disappointed...It’s possible to find attractive, well-made, even outstanding, wines that punch well above their price points."
The history of Château La Gurgue is closely linked to the village of Margaux. Two owners of the vineyard raced successfully to become mayors of Margaux. Claire Villars Lurton is the architect of the present revival. Year after year, she has done her best to bring out the unique terroir of Château La Gurgue in her wine.Trained by her grandfather, Jacques Merlaut, she was 25 when she took over the management of Châteaux Ferrière, Haut-Bages Libéral and La Gurgue. She then undertook a major rebuilding of the wineries of her estates. In 2018 La Gurgue was able to bring out a truly exceptional wine, taking advantage of the beauty that vintage had to offer.
2018 is a vintage that will certainly mark the spirits. A humid spring and an exceptional pressure of fungal diseases were followed by a summer with extreme sunshine conditions. Certain areas of the Margaux appellation and more generally the South of the Médoc were favored by a few thunderstorms during the summer which allowed to reduce the impact of the water stress. This was the saving grace of the vintage that allowed the wines to maintain a certain level of freshness.
Aging: 12 months in 20% new French Oak
57 % cabernet sauvignon, 35 % merlot et 8 % petit verdot. This wine is very perfumed with dark fruits and a very mild herbal mint quality. On the palate it is lush and round with a bright and energetic finish.
This is dense and layered with a velvety texture and very rich palate. Powerful yet fresh. Creamy and minerally. Unique Gurgue. From biodynamically grown grapes. ~ 94 James Suckling'
The 2018 La Gurgue is one of the little jewels of Margaux. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2018 has so much to offer. All the elements are wonderfully fused together. Ripe red cherry, blood orange, mint and sweet floral notes all build as this racy Margaux shows off its sensuality and charm. Mildew was especially severe, and yields were just 12 hectoliters per hectare, but the wine is superb. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot. ~93 Antonio Galloni
